Hello!
I have the same issue on my K11 video.
The gear change lever free play is way too big.
So I have two questions to You K11OGs.
First is it possible to get to that little sucker screw without removing rear swingarm (removing final drive is a PITA for me)?
Second how to remove gear box without disassembling ABS II - I have enough of bleeding the system.
If you have any remarks or tips regarding such job (sic I was there 2 months ago while spline job) i.e. removing the gear box, opening it, I would be more then glad to read.

No, I don't think so.

I don't think so. If there is, it would probably be more work than just pulling the ABS and bleeding the brakes.

I'm sure someone will chime in if I'm wrong. I've only have mine apart once, so there may be an unconventional method...

Regards,
Bill

Rafal & Bill,

If I remember correctly, at least one person here has removed their trans without disconnecting ABS II (?)

Hopefully someone will join in here and give some instructions.

John

I'm not gonna watch 10 minutes of boring video. What's a grub screw and where is it located?

You might know it as a set screw. Number 8 in this parts explosion diagram, I believe.

You don't need to remove the ABS 2 to remove the gearbox, you can juste pull it up and fix it there with cables or whatever.
It is not just bleeding the brakes lines, unscrewing and screwing back the lines to the ABS unit is quite difficult.

Hello!

Finally the job is done! (I had a 4 week vacation break with the gearbox on a table).
The screw is secured with loctite. A hint: after removing the clip no 24 from part 25, the 25 can be slide through gearbox breather. That allows to take out the 21 and open the access to the grub screw 8. This make all job much easer.
The surprise for me was to find so much deposit - a kind of grey dust on all the parts.

Best regards,

Glad to hear you got it sorted out.
What did you decide on the abs2, did you disconnect? or leave in place?

If you left it in place, let the forum know how YOU did it.

Hello!
ABS was taken away, now the process of bleeding. Leaving it as it is was not comfortable, as foot rests have to be removed. Now I am quite handy with assembling breaking system Smile.
Along with the gearbox I did: main shaft seal exchange (I have had a special tool made), clutch housing dynamic balanced. Also discovered that alternator bearings are running out - this is a task for winter time.

Best regards,

I just ran into the same issue:excess slack in gear shift lever on a 1997
K1100 LT.So there seems no easy way to reset that setscrew#8;transmission and final drive have to be removed?.What does that take in hours or Dollars?
I am quite discouraged with this bike.

Sad Don't be discouraged. If you are handy at all you can handle this. If you have never had you bike apart before, plan on several evenings, maybe 15 to 18 hours with any questions posted here for help. Once the tranny is out, you remove the front cover, degrease the screw and hole, apply thread lock and reassemble. Let us know how we can help. Maybe there is someone close enough to come give you a hand. Smile

I finally broke down and took my K 1100 apart and redid that setscrew #8
that attaches the gearshift lever.
With the rearwheel off the ground and shifted into first gear I can rotate the rear wheel a small amount, less than 1 inch at the outer edge of the brake disc.Is that a normal amount of slack?
In the meantime I bought a Goldwing 1500 with a Hannigan sidecar,a very
comfortable ride but a bit pompous for my taste.

This is a perfectly normal play.

Hi Ernie!

Since the seal should be protruding 0,5mm above the surface, I`ll guess it`s the tool in the middle of this page Rafal has made.

Good morning Inge..

Agree... Rafal has some form of the "Handle" plus the "plug Driver" impact tool. Im always interested in tools that we make for ourselves. Often these are simpler and more ingenious than the 'company' designed tools that do the same job.

Very best regards......// Ernie in NH

Hi All,

As the UK BMW Club's Post /5 Toolhire Secretary, I naturally have loads of the specialist tools (for mid '70s through to the R1200 range). Last year I had a friend machine one of the 11-1-630 seal tools to allow seal to protrude 0.5mm. A simple operation, and furthermore anyone with a lathe should be able to manufacture the complete drift (and handle 00-5-500) with little effort.

Having said that, I also have tools that have never seen the light of day, so obviously 'adaptive engineering' is alive and well.

Regards

Mike
