Hi all, purchased a very low mileage 93 K1100RS in March. It runs great,but the gas tank makes noises when the air temp changes. This temp change can be quite dramatic in Vermont. The machine doesn't need to be running for this to occur. The sounds are similar to a whistle and also a groaning sound.It's pretty obvious it is being caused by expansion in the tank. Is a vent hose plugged? Is this normal? Is there a fix? Thanks in advance.

Yes - there is a plugged vent or pinched hose. It's pretty easy to pinch a hose when you're putting the tank back on. It's also easy to check for clogged vents. I'd check the gas lines under the tank first.

Hi Norm...

Here in NH the temp extremes are not that much different from VT,, but I dont have any "noise" issues with my K1100LT. There is no 'vent hose' to the best of my knowledge, but there is a vent hole on the rim of the tank cap flange. You'll see it when you open the cap on the left side..or in the direct front. Be sure this is a free hole and has not been blocked by faulty gasket installation. From the bottom of the tank there is only the "fuel delivery hose" and the electrical lead-out to a 4-pin electrical connector. IF there is a second hose, it is the California Emissions model and extends up into the tank to capture vapour. Check to see what you have...

God luck and keep us posted on your progress.... BTW what town in VT are you located ?? Perhaps a NH/VT "meet up" would be good at some point...eh?

Don`t know the US models in detail, but on this side of the pond it`s to small stubs on the underside (rear, right)
of the tank, which ends in a small plastic cup.
One stub is for the tank vent, the other comes from the small hole by the cap flange and is for water drain.

Same here for the U.S. models too.
Except that originally the two nipples had hoses directly connected. The one from the cap drain went down by the frame rail and the other one went to the vac connection at the top of the block behind the radiator.

Been consulting Realoem...and see we have kept the layout from K100`s a bit longer on this side of the pond......must be because of we have more air that still can be polluted.

A lot of riders/owners have added the "air accumulator" cup and capped the vac lines to the crankcase.
It's pretty bad if you overfill the gas tank and then the raw gas makes it's way down to mix with the oil. yuk.

Since I have done the cup conversion I can't count anymore how many times I have had gas dribble out down on the ground from the vent. I certainly wouldn't want that gas down in the engine oil.

Must be something here in VT. I am having periodic noises from my K1100LT. I asked about it in another thread, it does seem to be an under/over pressure in the tank, as I found that it will stop instantly if I open the tank while it is happening.
I recently was working around where my bike was parked on a very hot day and heard it squeal like it was venting something, lasted about three seconds. It had been off for at least thirty minutes at that point.
I also discovered that my front brake pucks are dragging slightly, so my operating temp is always running on the high side, kicking the fan on more often in slower speed traffic conditions. Perhaps this residual heat is making the venting issue become more noticeable?

My plan: Fix the dragging pucks 1st, then check out the vent system.

Thanks for all the help. Checked out the hoses and found that the tank vent had been rerouted from terminating at the crankcase to terminating into the atmosphere via a hose behind the right footpeg mounting plate. The crankase connection was pluged properly. Thing was that grey plastic disc was still inline in the vent tube. Seems as though this grey plastic disk must be some kind of noise making toy, maybe it's a party favor for German fuel systems engineers. Well no harm done, thanks again for all of your help.

Norm - the gray plastic thing is a check valve - required by California emissions standards - and therefore installed on all US bikes...
