I was out for a ride yesterday and after about sixty miles, everything suddenly died while I was stationary at a junction.Engine would turn over but not run.
Pushed it to the roadside and checked, when the ignition key was turned on everything lit up on the instrument cluster but no fuel pump noise, then I remembered having had this happen in the workshop recently when I had had the tank off.....(when the engine was stone cold;so not heat related. )I have done about 500 miles since I had the tank off, without incident.
So, i wiggled the wires of the four way connector under the tank and bingo! everything came back to life.Cut out twice more on the way home and the same "remedy" was effective.
I thought that I had cleaned this connector pretty well when I was in the workshop last time, but today I got out the contact cleaner and some small riffler files and set to ,giving it the best overhaul I could and it seems to be working OK ?
I have thought of replacing the whole connector with a new type, anyone done this kind of modification ? _________________ 1993(94 MODEL) K1100RS IN ASTRAL BLUE

Thanks for that Jeeves;I did use Dialectric grease this time.
If it does fail again I will certainly replace the plug with something else. _________________ 1993(94 MODEL) K1100RS IN ASTRAL BLUE

One of these would be a good substitute- can't be connected wrong

After I had problems starting due to the fuel pump not running, I cleaned, polished, and greased the tank connector. It worked for a year, then I had to do it again. That worked for another year. In the five years I've owned the bike, I've had to clean the connector every year. Recently, the problem re-appeared, so I cut out the connector and replaced it with this:

 | that looks great and i'm surprised it happens so often,,,maybe cover this connector with "liquid electrical tape" and keep the air off of it the stuff comes right off if you want it to,,,used this stuff in the marine trade on electrical connections,,,it works real good,,,i wonder if you live near the salt water for this to happen so much ?? _________________ K1100 RS 1993,the fast mystic red one with the burnished gold stuff

Liquid tape sounds like a good idea, though I suspect the problem happened so frequently because the connector is rather undersized for the job, so the initial corrosion caused the terminals to heat up and probably distorted and damaged them just enough to make them marginal conductors at best.
I don't live anywhere near salt water - in fact I'm about as far inland as you can get in the UK. However, I do use the bike year round in all weather, and the roads are frequently salted.
What part of Vancouver Island are you on (if you don't mind me asking)? I lived in Courtenay for six months in 2001/2002. _________________ '93 K1100RS

Level sensor, and power to the fuel pump. _________________ '93 K1100RS

You can drive here on your B.C. license for up to six months, as I recall. You may wish to obtain a so-called "International License" to go along with it - it's a document that explains the content of your license in an internationally-recognisable format. You can get one from the BCAA. Outside of that, just come over (you'll need a current passport, but when you enter the country you'll get far less hassle than crossing the border into the States), buy a bike, make sure the yearly tax is paid on it and it has a current MoT (gov't test) certificate and you're good to go. I'm sure the other UK folks will weigh in here if I've forgotten anything.
If you see any bikes you like whilst you're still there, let me know and (within reason and time permitting) I'll ride out and take a look. _________________ '93 K1100RS

Crossing into Canada is much easier- you folks are really nice.
Crossing into the USA (even for US citizens) is a P.I.T.A. Paranoia? _________________ John & Cathy

The yearly tax is currently £74 for a motorcycle over 600cc. You can also tax it for 6 months for £40.70. See http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10012524 for details. Since the tax (and MoT cert) is associated with the vehicle and not the owner, it's not unusual to buy a vehicle that still has plenty of tax on it. In fact, a long time before the tax runs out is often used as a selling point. So is having a good length of time before the MoT certificate runs out.
The MoT cert has to be renewed every year.
1000 euro for a K100 is reasonable. Good ones are getting hard to find, though, as are the K1100s. K1200s are common, but you'll pay a lot more of course. _________________ '93 K1100RS

As I understand it, the most troublesome thing is insurance.
In order to stand a chance you will need a British postal address for documents to be posted. You will need to know the Reg number of the bike in advance too.
