Got my 1996 K1100RS back from independent wrench in Florida where he perfromed a rear main seal change and final drive seal change. I was less then pleased with his work and it took nearly 2 months to complete the job. Once I got home to Georgia I got to looking at it and noticed that the Fox shock had been turned upside down. In some ways it fit better this way but the nut holding the shock on at the final drive end was tight but half on. There was two or three threads showing. He Loctite it but three threads hanging out?Obviously not right. So for those who have pictures, show them please or if you know which way it goes on say so. My paper work and rebuild manual hints at it and I think the way I had it is right, spring is on the bottom.

I originally didn't post picture because I was walking around in my pajamas Smile

This shows the way I have it. The wrench had it the other way. IF it is installed the way the wrench had it, the nut on the bottom could not be threaded all the way on with spacers on the inside to clear the final drive

Good morning MoonDog...

I have a 'progressive' shock from Progressive Suspension Inc,.. and it is installed 'rod side' down exactly as is the position you pictured.

Good luck.... but if you're unhappy with the 'wrench' find another guy for major work that has recommendations. Otherwise learn to do these things on your own.

I do most of my own work except for this one which was a rear main seal leak. Some tasks the average joe does require tooling which can be prohibitive. No one local here in the Savannah area and the nearest BMW dealer is Greenville and haven't heard much good about Charleston but may end up trying them.

That looks the same way I had my Fox installed too. I've since replaced it with a Realm shock, but yours looks right to me.
I still have a copy of the install/owners manual if you would like a copy.

I think I have a copy of the manual but it doesn't elude to which end goes up. I bought the bike with shock as shown so until I find definitive proof otherwise, it stays as pictured. It is a matter of curiosity now. If everyone who has this type of shock (which not many have) has it the same way I do, I'll be convinced.

Every gas pressurized shock I've worked with has had the body (heavy part) attached to the frame and the eye of the rod (light part) attached to the suspension arm to reduce the un-sprung weight. That lets the shock work better. Admittedly this may be splitting hairs on most street vehicles but it also usually makes for easier mounting and better packaging.
