Just got done puttin' a "Johnny Blanket" on my LT. It took me about 3 hours. Partly because of my relative unfamiliarity with the bike (I've only owned it for 8 months) which makes me tend to sit and think things over several times before I proceed, but mostly because . . . well . . . I'm just anal!
The project went well, and it looked good when it was finished. I know, I shoulda taken some pictures, but honestly, I don't even think about that kinda stuff when I'm concentrating on the task at hand.
I used the 24" wide bubble wrap stuff that's got the reflective material on both sides. Ran it from the steering head to just behind the seat hinge.
It's supposed to be around 90 degrees today, so I'm gonna see how well it works. I'll report back.
By the way, I've got over 20 feet of that stuff left. That's enough to do about 5 more bikes! If anyone wants some . . . lemme know, and I'll whack ya off a 4 foot piece and send it to ya! _________________ Scot

Well . . . I've gone for 3 different rides since I installed the Johnny blanket, and I'm not at all impressed with the results. It almost seems as if the heat on my a$$ is worse than before. I'm wondering if I made a mistake by using the stuff with the reflective material on both sides. Is the top side reflecting heat upward?
I dunno . . . I love to ride this bike, but after about a half hour, I'm miserable.
I stopped, during one recent ride, and immediately lifted the seat to see if the reflective material was hot on the top side. It wasn't.
Frustrating . . . _________________ Scot

Have you done the fan override switch mod?
That was the one change that helped me the most. _________________ John & Cathy

Hi Scot,
Can you post a pic of your install.
Here is the link where we first experimented with this. Works great for me.

Hi, John. No, I haven't done that mod. I'll have to do a search to see what it's all about. Thanks for the tip. _________________ Scot

Okay . . . here's a couple of pics. I wasn't real crazy about taking the tank off, but you should be able to get a pretty good idea of the installation from the pics. The "blanket" extends all the way forward to the steering head.

Needs to go down around the engine farther and then try to plug the gaps around the rubber heat stoppers. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Well, I used the 2 foot wide stuff. Had to trim it alittle so it didn't stick out below the side covers.
The rubber heat stopper(s) was broken in half at the top and just kinda hanging there.
The heat (what little there is) on my legs isn't a problem at all. It's my butt that really REALLY gets hot.
When I took the seat off to take the pictures, I noticed 4 (drain?) holes in the plastic bottom of the seat. I could see the foam inside the holes. Maybe that's where the heat is gettin' to me? _________________ Scot

That's totally opposite of the heat I get. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Yeah, I've heard of other people having a problem with the heat on their legs, but that's not an issue with me. I notice alittle warmth on my legs, but it's nowhere NEAR what I get on my butt. I'm gonna plug up those holes on the bottom of the seat & see if that makes any difference. If it doesn't, I'm gonna go shopping for some asbestos skivvies! _________________ Scot

Scot,
Looks like you have a good install & yes plugging up the holes is worth trying.
I also get heat on my legs but none on my rear since doing the Johnny blanket.

Why not glue some of that reflective material to the bottom of the seat like your gas tank? _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Been thinkin' 'bout doin' that! All I've gotta do is make sure I'm able to close and latch the seat. _________________ Scot

Okay . . . plan A.
As you can see in the picture below, I covered the bottom of my seating area with aluminized tape.
Last Saturday, I rode about 230 miles through beautiful southern Ohio. The temperature that day was in the mid to high seventies in the afternoon, and I really don't think the tape did much good. My butt still got pretty warm, although not as warm as it had in the past when the temperature was higher. (makes sense, huh?)
So . . . Plan B.
I installed the Corbin seat that was part of the deal when I bought the bike. I haven't been able to go for a ride with the Corbin yet, but surely will by this weekend. Stay tuned!
edit: Oh yeah, I also stuffed the drain holes with cotton balls before applying the tape. _________________ Scot

Uncomfortable?
We have 2- a Canyon Dual Sport and a Dual Tour.
I have heard more than once that you either really like them or really don't.
Guess our rear ends are Corbin shaped because I like the Dual Sport and we both like the Dual Tour for 2-up. _________________ John & Cathy

I apologize for the delayed response. I've been trying to upload pictures of the Corbin seat from the POS Kodak camera I just bought to my computer . . . with absolutely no luck. But, that's another story.
I don't know what model the Corbin is, but it reminds me alot of the Dual Canyon I had on my airhead RT for a very short time. It just kinda reminds me of sitting on a large funnel. There's no room to move or change position, cuz yer butt is "sucked" down into the bottom of the funnel. I don't like it.
While changing out the seats, I noticed that the Corbin is significantly heavier than the stock seat. That's probably why the Corbin seemed to stave off the "butt heat" much better than the stock one.
So, it seems like I have a choice to make:
1. Stock seat - comfy but HOT
2. Corbin seat - not so comfy, but much cooler
I dunno . . . _________________ Scot
