Can anyone enlighten me on the diagnostic function of the brake warning lamp.
Are th electronics clever enough to tell me the front brake light switch has failed?
Rear brake light still operates fine but warning lamp stays on (front brake light does not work)
Before I dig deeper under the tank.
Cheers

The bulb monitoring unit monitors the front and rear sidelamps and brake light filaments. On start-up it also checks for correct operation of both front and rear brake switches before extinguishing the lamp check indicator (red lamp - triangle symbol).
So yes, if one of your brake light switches doesn't work then the warning light stays on. _________________ '99 K11LT |

Nick,
I had logged my diagnostic many moons ago. Perhaps it will help you....

Yep AND! I just found out that if either brake switch is stuck on, then after start up and rear lamp is O K and applying only the other working brake (switch), the brake warning lamp will go out. There is no adjustment on the front switch and after I installed a new front brake leaver assy. (badly leaking and had ruined the switch) and switch, I noticed that I only had to apply the rear brake (most of the time) to extinguish the brake warning lamp. I had to slightly bend the front brake switch arm to make sure that it was fully depressed with the brake leaver all the way back. It had worked fine when I installed it For a little switch, it is expensive. Later,,, De P S Good write up Sanjiv _________________ '13 FJR Yamaha

Then your BMU don`t function as it should, normally it`s needed that both switches first have to short and then open the respective circuit before the warning lamp is extinguished.

If you need to bend the switch lever arm, it have to be something that isn`t correct mounted.......
have you adjusted the new brake lever correctly?

Inge, yep, I can’t agree with you more.
#1 the switch is mounted solidly with 2 small screws and isn’t adjustable. The front brake leaver does come back solidly every time-I had checked that when I installed & adjusted, the new front brake reservoir and operated the new switch a few times. It didn’t depress the leaver much and for over $50 U S it should have worked forever but didn’t without slightly bending the leaver.
#2 As complicated as this bike is I would have thought that the Brake Monitor would have required a Fail Safe operation of both brake switches being checked for both opening and closing of their contacts, but mine doesn’t do that. I just checked & with it in neutral, engine cutoff switch on, on the center stand, side stand up, both brakes depressed and when I turned on the key the brake lamp didn’t come on even after I started it and released the brakes. So much for “Fail Safe”. I thought it did the brake check after it started but evidently it does its check when the key is turned on. Just for kicks how about doing the same check as above with yours & letting us know if it works the same or differently. I believe you but do it for me anyhow.

The reason I did ask about the brake lever adjustement, if it`s not properly adjusted....it won`t return fully, and open the switch.
Have never heard/seen that it have been neeeded to bend the switch lever arm.
On both my K`s the BMU functions as earlier described, both switches have first short and then open the respective circuit before the warning lamp goes out. |

Thanks, Inge. I've spent enough on my (new to me) '94 K1100LT so I guess the brake monitor is good enough for me. It only had 18,000mi on it and had been setting for a while so it is a wonder anything works. If you are ever near Atlanta Georgia USA, stop in & I'll show you one that the switch leaver had to be bent just a little. I suspect that Norway is a little far for a ride over, right? Thanks again for all the information. De,,, _________________ '13 FJR Yamaha
