I'm about to do a full service on my K1100rs, I've never done a fork oil change and reading on here and other sites it seems tricky, can anyone give me a step by step idiots guide on how to get this right first time. It'd be appreciated.

Nowt hard or tricky, just take care not to strip the drain plugs. many prefer 10W rather than recommended 7.5W.

Thanks Tim, people say it's tricky getting the oil in, any tips on that?

Tis just a case of pouring slowly enough to allow the air out without it blowing the incoming oil with it. IIRC using small funnel with 5/16" pipe puts the oil low enough down & to one side of the fork tube, so the air comes up the other side.
OR Push the wheel up so the springs are out of the top, let the oil run down the coily bits (tech term).
Consider also a squirty oil can, slow & time consuming but less messy.

Just a couple other things I found out doing mine recently:

1. Careful not to strip the fill caps as well. One of mine was previously overtightened.

2. Oil viscosity("w" rating) is not standard across brands. Find one of the charts on line that shows relative viscosity of various brands/weights. Before I discovered this I used 10w BelRay and it ended up being way too stiff.

+ 1 on 1.

The fill caps have crush washers that crush just a split second before the threads strip. BMW could have used an O ring there, but decided on crush washers instead. I would get new crush washers, and be very careful torquing the fill caps. The fill caps on the K were all but stripped by a dealer "technician" - I eventually replaced both tops and fill caps.

To stop the fork oil going all over the disc and tYre when you are draining the forks, get some alfoil and stuff it around the back of the fork lower and the disc to form a bit of a funnel effect, if you stuff bits of the alfoil in the disc carrier then it will stay there and keep the forkin oil off stuff, just use your oil drain tray under the alfoil.

Take the fill plugs out, take the drain plugs out, pump the forks with the front brakes on a few times, replace the drain plugs, I used 10wt oil, 350ml in the left one and 400 in the right one, nip the fill plugs up not too tight as mentioned above and yer done.

I had mostly water come out of mine and some dubious looking gunge so I pulled them totally apart and replaced seals etc. Stuffed one of the seals when putting them back together so had to do that one again!

Another solution you find at post #20, in this thread.
