I've had my bike for a little over a year now and up until today assumed (I know) that my ABS was working properly. At start up the ABS lights flash, then go out when I roll. Today, I stalled the bike, none to gracefully Embarassed , trying to get out of a tight parking spot. When I restarted the bike the ABS performed its self test and the lights went out. Now here's what's puzzling me. Prior to today the ABS lights alternately flashed prior to going out. After stalling the bike today the lights flashed simultaneously before going out. Which is correct and what could of happened that would have changed this? Question

IMHO both are correct, they just tell you different things. The lamps should flash together with engine running & no forward movement, once the bike has done a few yards the lamps extinguish to signify ABS successfully operational.
However if your battery or it's connections are below par then a "low voltage" error will register (alternate flashing). I guess you have ABS2 as on that model. Low volt errors on ABS2 will auto reset without resorting to the "wire, connector, reset button" procedure with which some of us are most familiar Very Happy

The only thing that changed, is that you restarted your bike after a period of
running which charged the battery.

The thing is with ABS2, when the lights alternately flash, they do not go out on their own when you start rolling.
Only by depressing the abs dash switch do the lights stop flashing.
At that point the left abs light stays lit solid, then only for about 10 minutes or so till they start flashing again.

How old is your battery, or how cold is it where you are storing your bike.
If your battery is much over 5yrs old, I'd suggest replacing it. Or at least start researching where you will buy a new one and have the information handy and ready. Be checking for sales and such over the winter.

Well, on my ABS2 for the past year the alternating lights did go out when I started rolling. A couple of times they didn't go out, but if I restarted the bike they would go out.I understand this is because a warm bike takes less power to start.
The PO installed the battery, so based on his time of ownership the battery is probably 3-4 yrs old. The bike is stored in an unheated garage, but here in the South that's not much of an issue.I'll start researching batteries. Anyone have any recommendations?

For the ABS's brain, stalling the engine may be understood like a very low battery situation.
It happened to me a few times.

Absolutely! I recommend you be DAMN careful (while installing a new battery) NOT to allow the (steel) battery hold down plate to come in contact with the positive battery terminal.

My new battery ended up costing me damn near $800! Shocked

Well . . . Embarassed . . . The battery hold down, which was now hot (as in live!) after I snugged the screws, (no spark, no indication of trouble when the hold down contacted the + side of the battery) in turn, energized the Motronic unit when I tightened its hold down screw. Again, no sparks, no nothin'. As I snugged the Motronic unit keeper screw, the battery hold down rotated clockwise . . . very, VERY slightly. The edge of the Motronic unit touched the hard brake line that's really, REALLY close to begin with. HUGE SPARK!!! Scared the poop outta me!

To make a long story . . . well . . . just alittle longer . . . Wink

That big spark spelled the demise of the ABS2 hydro unit. Didn't hurt the Motronic unit a bit. Shocked

I ended up buying one on eBay that had a money back guarantee if it didn't work. Had to take it to a dealer so they could re-code the hydro unit so it would recognise that it was now in control of the brakes on an LT, not an R1150RT.

I'd also like to thank all those who contributed their thoughts during my crisis, especially whyoldbill. His little brake bleeding machine dealy made the job quick and painless.

So, thats the name o' that tune! Embarassed

Can't remember where I heard it, but it was said that BMW installs really nice, expensive electronic units that do an outstanding job of protecting the fuses. Rolling Eyes

As the fog of senility temporarily eased, I realized I left out, or, more appropriately, mis-stated the root cause of my ABS debacle in my post above.

It was, in fact, the O.D. of the wire eyelet (stock, I presume) that attaches to the positive battery terminal, (Westco battery - no cap over terminal) combined with the possibility that the attachment hole in the + terminal may have been positioned just a fuzz to high, which forced the edge of the eyelet to stick up, just barely, above the top surface of the battery. THAT'S what started the disasterous chain of events into motion.

Okay . . . that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it . . . for now. Mr. Green

Thanks for the warning. I'll keep a close eye on it.
