Hello All!
I got a K1100RS at the end of the summer. I have not had a bike in 12 years and it's been fun. I've put about 3K miles on it and I think this is going to be a keeper.

First, the rear wheel is bent. It doesn't seem like I can find a new Gold wheel, so the choice is a new non-gold one or repairing the gold bent one. Are there stronger replacements?

Next is that there is a knocking noise at idle when the bike is warm. I meet a guy named Dewey, who is a tech at a dealership and rides a K100RS. He seemed to think it was the alt pulley rocking on the shaft. Is that a usual item to replace?

Well first off, welcome to the forum.
I can't say for certain how many of the "gold" wheels were produced. I think it was a limited production of the '93's but I'm probably wrong.
No mater what someone can do with the wheel you have, it's still been "tweaked" and will not be the same as new.
Not to mention the fact that you would have a hard time finding someone that is willing to take the liability risk of straightening a motorcycle wheel, without causing further hidden damage.
You can try and contact some of the bike salvage yards around the country and see if one may be available that way, still not a guarantee of a "true" wheel, but I seriously doubt you will find a new one even in the fatherland.

Another option would be to get a standard silver one and have it powder coated gold.

WELCOME to the OG.

Nice looking bike (my first BMW was a mystic red '93 with gold wheels just like yours)


2 years ago I had the same problem, wheel- wise. I had bought a pair of black powder-coated from another member here. Unfortunately I hit a very sharp edge where the road was being repaired (no warnings) and bent the rear wheel.

I agree with Scott about repairs but there is a company a couple hours from me that will straighten cast wheels. I am dubious but will contact them and discuss the problem. I will let you know any results.

BTW, I have heard more than one K bike that "knocks" at idle, including, oddly enough, my previous '93 RS.

When you hear that knocking noise at idle, does it continue if you pull in the clutch lever?

He most likely could have referencing the "Monkey Nuts" in the alternator cup making the knocking noise.

I have 2 late 90's LT's and they also have a slight knock, tappet sounding noise when the idle is below 1000 rpm.

That is exactly what it does. I'll read up on how to replace them.

I think I'm going to get a used silver wheel off ebay. That will give me time to look into getting my current one repaired.

Be careful using this practice. The parts fiche from Max is a BMW sales tool. Not a catalog or maintenance tool. The fiche will only list parts that are available from BMW, but these might be acceptable replacement parts, but not the "right parts" or the parts that the bike was originally equipped with. This is why the fiche is updated so often. as parts become no longer available they need to change it.

So with this example, it maybe that it is the same wheel, or it maybe that this wheel is an acceptable replacement. But it does not mean that it was the wheel that came on the bike.

Hmm, that bike looks familiar....(you're the second owner since I sold it this past summer). Damn sharp looking I must say!



The rear wheel has always had a bent rim edge, the tire guys always point it out, but it doesn't seem to effect the tire holding air or rim balance. Unless it really bugs you, I'd let it be.

I always wanted the silver rims too, but then you need to paint or get a silver swing arm and rear drive as well. I never liked the gold.

As far as the knocking at idle, I always heard that and the local mech at ADV BMW said it was the counter balancer working at idle. It is certainly due for a throttle body synch and it always seemed to idle slow.

If you haven't already, the brake lines and fuel lines should be replaced, otherwise she's great bike and I'm glad it in loving hands.

If I can answer any questions about the eight years that I owned it, don't hesitate to contact me with any questions.

I'm glad you got on this site, it's a tremendous resource for these great bikes.

There is a K1100 get together up in Marion, VA at Hungry Mother SP this spring, maybe we'll see you there?

At first, I didn't feel the wheel shape mattered. The last few weeks, I've been leaning the bike a bit more and I think the hoop and wobble give a disconcerting feel. Since I've decided to keep it for a while, I want to fix everything that bothers me. I like the gold wheels, so I may use the silver one for a while and send the gold one off to be repaired or keep an eye out for a nice used one.

The knocking is getting louder. I'm having someone look at it tomorrow.

The brake lines are done. I'm going to hold off on the fuel lines for a bit. I use to have a hot rod Scirocco that used the same fueling system. I feel like I can do that stuff myself.

Thanks for offering help. I'll sure try for the Hungry Mother GTG. It's close to Mt Rogers, which is one of the hikes I want to do next year.

You might want to check with this guy in TN - he's a lot closer than the one in NH. http://www.framestraightsystem.com/Alloywheel.htm

I don't know about the finish on the wheel: "Frame Straight repairs will leave "No Tooling Marks", No dings, No nicks , No impression in the metal of the wheel."

When I had the front wheel straightened in CA - bent so badly the air leaked out (the rotors had to be straightened, too) - there was not a mark on the finish.

With all the alloy wheels on the road, straightening is becoming pretty common. The shop that straightened mine in CA was a specialty shop like the one in TN - motorcycle frames and wheels.

The knocking was from the throttle bodies not being synced. The issue is un-metered air. There are zip ties holding on the boots. from the way they are tightened, there is a gap that is letting the "extra" air in. The fix will be correct clamps and replacing some old rubber bits.
