My 1994 k1100rs, 31k on the clock is a pig to start if its been left, even overnight especially in the cold, it always catches eventually but just doesn't fire quickly and certainly much longer than it should be, the fuel pump works I keep the 'choke' at the halfway point, battery is always fully charged, I leave the throttle alone as always but it's just a pig to fire up. Any ideas? _________________ Riding a 1995 Marakesh red K1100rs

Check your fuel filter and sync the throttles. _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.

Hi cheers, fuel filter less than a year old, I synch throttles regularly, once it fires it runs like a dream. _________________ Riding a 1995 Marakesh red K1100rs

I had a fuel filter clog after 500 miles because of a bad tank of gas. That's why I carry a spare. _________________ Rich

I'll change it then but wouldn't it give other symptoms? Intermittent running etc. _________________ Riding a 1995 Marakesh red K1100rs

I found it only gave me trouble when I started. Once it got flowing and the pressure was up it ran but not as good as it had been. It took me a while to figure it out because I had just changed the filter and I thought it couldn't be that. _________________ Rich

2 ways to rule out that possibility:
1. Check the fuel pressure on the fuel rail, turn the key on with the bike on the center stand and the side stand up (kill switch in the on position). Should be about 60 lbs, 40 lbs with key off, if memory serves correctly.
If you don't have a fuel pressure test gauge, try the next suggestion.
2. Po' man's check: (again, bike on center stand, side stand up) Cycle the key (or the handle bar kill switch) off and on 3 or 4 times (wait for the fuel pump to stop before turning key off). This will (or should) fully pressurize the fuel rail. If she fires right up after doing this, that filter could be plugged, the fuel pump could be weak, or the fuel pressure regulator could be on its last legs...

I tried this today, temp was a cool zero degrees and yes she fired up right away, so I think I'll change filter first as that's the cheapest option, would the other 2 possibilities provide any other symptoms do you think? I only ask coz the bike, once started runs perfectly. Thanks so far. _________________ Riding a 1995 Marakesh red K1100rs

Usually when the regulator is bad, the spark plugs will be rather black, instead of the normal ash/grey color. You can also smell "petrol" in the oil if the diaphragm is leaking badly.
If the fuel pump is weak, your acceleration would be poor. It might stall on you. Your spark plugs could be more white than grey (running really lean).
Those are the things I'd look at if the filter (most likely culprit) doesn't change the symptoms, but I'm no mechanic. I just try to impersonate one in my garage _________________ '02 - GL1800

Don't forget there's a fuel sock fitted on the input side of the fuel pump. You have to take the pump out to get at it. Having just done that on my '94 RS I found that filter to be very dirty and could have starving the pump. I ended up fitting a secondhand pump off ebay because mine was very noisy, together with a new fuel sock and its all running fine now - any very quiet as well. _________________ 1980 CB900FA
