Gidday folks

This bike of mine is a weird bag of tricks, it is surprising me constantly with what the previous owner, but more so the bike shop I brought it off have done to it in regards to maintenance...

So far I have found, only one fork tube had been given fresh oil as one was black and one was perfect, the final drive oil was black but the engine and gearbox like new, the electric screen wire and heated grip wires broken and now this below which is odd

So last night I look "CLOSER" at the brakes on the front after I had done the oil change on the forks... but WTF it that in there?? I take a closer look and buggar me dead if one of the brake pads ihas been put on back to front, I kid you not, no wonder the front wheel is a little stiff to roll about but there is no squealing metal on metal noise which is funny.
Also I have ridden the bike about 20 kms like this and the brakes seemed very good to me, well what I have to compare it to is my old R100rs, which didn't have the best brakes but the K1100 brakes pull up so much better, I cant wait to feel them when it is all correct and the ABS is working

Yes I am embarrassed that I didn't notice that earlier and I have been taking the bike shops word for it who I brought it off that it was "in roadworthy condition" except for the non working speedo so they said, bullshit to that!, so I shall be looking at things a lot more closely..

So I pinched the brake hoses closed, pulled off the calipers and whipped them around to the local bike mechanic, we both undone the calipers, brake pads were down but still had some life left in them, so I order new ones anyway for the fronts and back
We popped open the calipers, removed the pistons, checked the O rings, cleaned then regreased the pistons and reassembled both units and I am now waiting for the pads to arrived.

As for the brake disk that had metal on metal contact well they look and feel fine, just like the other side and hopefully I may have gotten anyway with it as it was on the side that the piston was not closing fully.

I"ll keep you all posted

I haven't got my K here but I thought the front pads were asymmetrical? If so how could one be around the wrong way???

But I could be wrong......

Drikko,
It sounds to me like someone put the metal side of the brake pad against the rotor. I guess either the rotors are really tough or the pads have some really soft metal in them.

Geez Grant, your poor bike has suffered at the hands of a real numbskull or two in previous owners. I'm glad you've got it and are sorting it out.

Ah, yeah OK so it was both sides of the caliper back to front, that figures then. I thought you meant only one side of the caliper was reversed.

Gidday,

Today a flushed out the old fluids and bled up the front and rear brakes with some new clean Castrol dot 4 and again when I began I had two different coloured fluids in each, yellowish in the front and green down the back and you would think than the PO would of changed both at the same time while he was at it.

For the fronts I bled from the handle bar master cyclinder down to the ABS 2 unit and then from the ABS unit down to each calliper, not problems at all.

I then had trouble undoing the bleeder for the rear brakes on the ABS 2 unit under the seat, the larger bold head 20mm would turn but not the bleeder nut as I could not get a good bite on the larger head to hold it while undoing the bleeder nut due to the solid brake lines running over the top of it.

So I didn't bother and went straight to the calliper and bled from the rear fluid holder through the ABS unit and down to the calliper which I then pumped out the old green brake fluid easily and fast unit the new yellowish castrol fluid was coming through.

Hope this procedure buy not allowing the ABS rear to be bled is ok??

Another job ticked off the list.

I usually just go for a burn and do 10 or more crash stops from 120ks or so to walking pace in a row and they're bedded in. The disks are very hot at that stage and the pads will be bedded in. It's also good practise for no abs crash stops Smile
