I know, I am on my THIRD K1100LTSE But I have never had grief getting parts (YET). The dealers want you to buy summat newer, that's why they aren't too interested in supplying parts. The car dealer is ignorant of bikes so if you have the number they will back order it either from UK HQ or Germany. Every time I go to my local bike dealer, there's the sucking of teeth & "no TOO OLD mate". Still managed to get a screen bracket thingy last year though, don't ask how I broke it.

Interesting thread with very good suggestions and potential solutions. There is something that I suspect everyone needs to keep in mind with your K11's.

As already noted, the K11's were set up by BMW with a venting tube to the engine for vapors and over fills.....and yes, gasoline does break down oil (in copious amounts), but if the bike is at operating temperature fuel in the oil does cook off with out serious damage to your oil.....I seriously doubt that reinstalling the vent line to the block will cause your engines any damage and will be your overall solution to fumes.....although it won't be perfect, as you all know the gas in your tanks can come to a boil on some occasions and puts a lot of stress to the whole system.

I can tell you that after being the owner of two brand new K11RS bikes (1995 & 1996), which I had modified the venting tube as well....with the same fear as expressed here.....that your better off replacing them.

One last note, for the stinky gas cap, buy the new repair kit, it will make a difference.

Final note....no matter what you do to the K11's though, you will always have some gas fumes that you will smell if for no other reason then the gas that is cooking in your tank.

Note too that later years, with the K12's, BMW installed the carbon filters for gasoline fumes.....If I still owned a K11, I would probably look for a carbon canister that could be well hidden under the fairing and have sufficient access to fresh air....as a real solution.

I haven''t posted here is some time and many of the old timers I'm familiar with have passed on. But I can tell you that after 10 years of owning K11's that to this day I still yearn for one every time I see one on the road. The thing was, as I got older, I couldn't handle the intense heat off these babes.

Keep the shiny side up folks Wink
