Hello.. this might have been covered in another post but I haven't seen one so far. If so, my apologies.
I have a leak on my timing cover, the bottom right, looking at the engine from the front to back. It is were the valve cover rubber gasket meets the timing cover and I believe it is from simple age. 95 K 1100RS with 38,000 Kilometers on it. My question is. I am assuming I will have to remove the valve cover and timing cover to repair the gasket on the timing cover, but will I also need to remove the crankshaft cover? Thanks in advance for any answers, great forum. _________________ 95 K1100 RS

Try this :- http://k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8395
I searched using "timing AND cover AND leak" If you put AND in caps you only get 17 hits instead of 1050.

Hi Tim.. thanks for the WOW!!! prompt reply
I actually had viewed that post and considered it but I got this machine from the original owner about 10 K Kilo ago and I don't think the pump would have been removed and regasketed. Could be a BMW flaw for certain.. I will check it over the next couple of months and let you know ..
Again, Thanks _________________ 95 K1100 RS

If you only have a leak in this particular spot ?, you only need to remove the valve cover.
Clean of old sealant from the surface where the cylinder head, timing cover, valve cover meets (both top and bottom).
Add a small dab of sealant at these two spots, remount the valve cover...after the needed curing time. (if any).
BTW. It isn't any gasket behind the timing cover. |

Hello again
I was wondering if I could only remove the valve cover and the timing cover.. is there not a silicone sealer behind the timing cover.. in my mind I thought of it as a gasket.. my mistake. So I should be able to pull both valve cover and timing cover; clean the sealant from the timing cover and check the rubber gasket from the valve cover to make sure it isn't cracked or damaged in anyway *replace if it is* and then use as you say small bead of sealer on the timing cover and remount.
I might just check for a blocked u channel while I am there.. we won't be riding for a few months and I am doing a couple of things while I have some weekends..
Again.. thanks a ton..

Does your engine look like this? (oil/coolant pump removed, obviously)
Then do check the U channel since it may be the source of the oil leak even though you see oil out at the valve cover. It was on my previous K-RS.
If you remove the oil/coolant pump then re-install, be careful with the amount of sealant you apply. More is NOT better. Good luck with your R&R.
Here is my thread about that type of oil leak:

Well John, (Sugarhill) we both posted the same link. I remembered your post when Kris posted, as I have had the same problem for a few years now but can't be ars..... bothered to do it. Similarly my oil pump has never been removed either.
I believe this leak is a common occurrence, but it keeps my left boot waterproof.
As an old brit biker, try this:- when leak tracing, clean the area, chuck some flour at it & ride for a bit in the dry. _________________ Regards Tim,

Kris,
I have been on some very SLOW forums also.
But that's not us....
Really great group here, even if we are all around the world.

I had a chance over the weekend to get the oil and water pump off of the K.. U channel covered by sealer. Funny thing.. I figured I would just keep on and removed the crank cover; timing cover and cylinder cover and ensure every thing was as fresh as possible. When I took off the cylinder cover, the rubber gasket was covered both sides with a gasket sealer (blue, not factory I am assuming) and it was seeping very lightly here and there. So here's my new question to whom ever would answer with a bit of knowledge which I am lacking. Isn't putting this gasket sealer over what appears a pliable; not cracked; non-cut or damaged rubber gasket asking for a problem or was this a good choice for someone not quite sure were to start. Bear in mind I am coming at this without a lot of knowledge myself. (it's why I am asking) Thanks again.. love the forum...

If you have a good pliable gasket with very clean surfaces you should only need the "form-a-gasket" sealer at the corners where the covers meet.
You will want some gasket sealer at the "half-moon" parts of the gasket as the gasket can leak there with out extra sealer.
One other factor with the gaskets sealing properly is the condition/pliability of the rubber bushings(11 14 1 461 475) on the cover bolts. The bushings are what maintains the "pressure" on the gaskets. _________________ Ride safe.

And when putting the valve/crank covers back on do not over-torque their bolts. They are "shoulder" bolts and it can strip the threads. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I noticed that when I pulled them off and had to scrap gasket sealer from the rubber bushings.. out comes the keyboard and orders new ones.. managed to salvage a couple but most were old and very hard in comparison to the ones on the crank side.. hmm replace or curse at your self later I thought .. _________________ 95 K1100 RS
