You'll spend a lot of money for not much gain with a conventional tune.
I wanted about a 50% improvement in power and torque with my K100 16V, after pricing up headwork, cams, etc, I went the turbo route.
I did all the fabrication myself and the total price came out at less than 900 euros.
The mid-range torque is incredible.
The turbo is only a small T25, if you want more, use a bigger turbo.
Well recommended!
If you do a search for BMW K100 turbo Sportax, you'll find a brief write-up of the build.
As you can see, the bike still looks fairly standard.

Yea John, I must be wrong on the year. It would have to be a 4V cam to fit in the 1100 motor.

After a little further reading, the K1004V Euro market cams were the more aggressive cams, not a lot, but a little anyway.

I did some looking also.

Apparently a popular engine mod for Minis (the original little one, not the newer BIG Mini) is a K100/K1100 cylinder head.

These folks are really mod crazy. REALLY.

Scott, from looking at many of their sites, I am largely agreeing with you but it looks like the 16 valve K100 engines run a slightly taller profile camshaft than the K1100. When BMW punched the brick out to 1100cc, they slightly changed the cam profiles to create more power at lower rpms.

I would be interested to see if the cam profiles on my K100 are taller(?) than the ones in a K1100- remember that mine in a non-USA bike. Will "hotter" cams make Gwen happier?

I have to do 2 or 3 valve shims this winter- I'll measure the cam lobes. Maybe a K1100 owner will be doing the same.

Stay tuned

Hey John,
I'll bring my 1100 to you and you can measure the lobes whilst attending to the valves Idea

No seriously, if I ever get the wife's car out of my garage, I'll be checking the valves on the K again (75k, it's about due). I think the timing chain needs checked out too. sounding noisy.

This is quite common in the UK. BHP increases from 60bhp to 120bhp with the K1100 Head mod using the fuel injection set up from the bike as well.

I sold a head and fuel system to a guy in the UK who told me all about it! As well as the head there is a kit you have to buy which gives a cam chain cover and chain and all other bits to make it work.

I hope he beefs up the old A Series engine as not sure it will stand 120bhp for long!!

Very interesting project though!

Best regards,

David

Thanks for the information David. I saw some of the products available for this mod, including camshaft belt drive pulleys.

I would think that with 120hp on tap these "true" Minis would give the new (BMW) Minis a proper beating, no?

So Gwen,

Maybe you need to talk to Steverino about swapping a K1200RS brick engine/trans into the Blue Streak.

While it has been done before, THAT would be a great build thread for the K11OG forum.

I'd even be interested in this

Thanks for all the posts and suggestions.

I went to the speed shop and they are booked thru Jan. with work and are not taking on any new jobs.

John, while swapping out a K1100 with a K1200 power plant would most definatly be fun, it's not the direction I want to head.

I need to do the rear main seal on the Blue Streak, replace all the dash switches, install the extra set of CREE T6's, repair the Trouatech luggage rack where the AUX fuel cell, resolve why my CPAP charging system isn't working and work of some minor wiring issues.

Next will be finishing up the K1100RS frame slider project.

Next, start on the K1100RS Combat Touring Aluminum Panniers project.
(I've alreadly starting my metal man in Bristol about this)

For fear of taking on more than I can afford to complete, I REALLY need to finish that trans rebuild before starting on this.

So I'm going to softly shelve this and talk to the speed shop again in Jan.

And on this subject, does anyone know if the cams in K1 and/or K100RS4V are "hotter" than K1100?

Yes,the euro k1/k100-16v/k1200rs-gt cams(same p/n) are hot.I have installed k1200rs cams in my k1100lt witout any need for valve clearance
adjustment.I also installed the f/d 12/33 from a euro k1.

I had the opportunity to endurance race a 4v K100 decades ago, up in Seattle. We managed something like 2nd or third in open super bike though, to be honest, it had more to do with field attrition over the 6 hrs than it had to do,with our expert tuning or riding.
AFIK, engine was pretty much stock except for a 4 pack of downdraft Keihin FCR 41s with open stacks staring up at you when you looked down the side of the gas tank. The power was crisp and the top end acceleration was exceptional for a K100. Looked and sounded *awsome* too.
If I was making a hot motor that's where I'd start.

Greeting, earthlings! I bought my first K11LT two and a half hours ago, and the first thing I did when I got home was google 'K1100 6th gear'...and here I am! I don't need more power, here in England I've got quite enough speed camera anxiety as it is. I'm VERY relieved that my new K bike can't do what my Hayabusa did. But I would love a much higher 5th gear, so let's not forget that part of the project, you crazy speed freaks!

Just get a f/d from a k1.My k1100lt is going 208 km/h(gps) in 4th gear so no need for a 6th gear.

Tell me more! I don't understand this, because the K1 and K1100LT have the same gear ratios. But the K1 has an 18 inch rear wheel, whereas the LT has a 17 inch. Maybe the idea is to put an 18 inch one on the LT?

The RS tire is about 1% smaller than the LT tire.

Early K1100LTs have a 32/11(2.91) final drive. K1s and the later K1100LTs have a 33/12(2.75) final drive.

RS bikes have a 31/11(2.82)

Here's another way to do it - will take about $6-700 to do - parts;labor;shipping

I had the 2:54 gear set

from a R1200CL installed in my K1100 housing. Work done by Anton

Largiader @ http://largiader.com/shop/. All seals and bearings except

the large crown bearing were replaced.

Not cheap to do - but not a job for the back yard mechanic either. Gear lash

and preload have to be set right the first time or you get to buy more

expensive BMW parts.

I have the R1200c gears in my K11RS and at 65mph it has dropped the revs by about 500. It's the best mod I have done, the great torque of the K11 engine is being used more now and the fuel economy is also better and best of all i'm not searching for 6th gear anymore. The gears have been installed for about 5 years or more and I did the same mod in a K100 2v about 9 years ago.

OK, I spoke with Anton yesterday and have my name in the hat for a set of 2.54 gears to be installed in my K1100LT. He mentioned that it would effect pulling off from a stop but my K11 seems to have plenty of torque so I'm in.

Dave Norris, any thoughts on the pulling off from a stop issue?
