Hi.
Some time ago I posted up a request to anyone selling a K series, to get in touch,
Many thanks to the few who did,
I have ended up with a 1993 K1100RS, in great condition, with 40,000 miles.
I picked it up yesterday and rode the 200 miles home and it's superb.
I'm soooooooo happy with it,
Engine is quiet and silk smooth, and there were no running issues at all on the motorway yesterday.
However today I took it for a run and got stuck in some heavy traffic, and noticed the temperature gauge needle getting uncomfortably close to the red zone.
As soon as I got moving again it crept back down to where it normally is when moving at speed, which is just below the middle of the gauge.
So is this normal for these bikes.
Your input appreciated.

The fan starts a tad before the needle enters the red, you was probably very close.
But you can check if the fan moves freely, not unusual that it is seized.

My fan doesn't come on untill a needles width of the red mark. If you don't know how long its been you can drain and refil the coolant, or first check the level in the bottle. I installed a low temp thermostat, mine runs now between the center and on mark left of center.

bikesnbones - yes, these bikes run hot.

You don't have your location anywhere - can't tell if you live in a hotter climate or a cooler climate.

A lot of people have installed Jonny blankets (insulation to keep the heat off the rider), and a number of us have installed fan override switches - so we can turn the fan on before the bike needs to turn it on. This means the bike does not heat up as much.

In the UK its not that common (unless you're city commuting) for the fan to come on unless its one of the two days a year above 25 degrees. I make sure I cycle the fan regularly to make sure its not seized - just let the engine run a while after a ride, wait for the fan to kick in and then wait until it shuts off to turn ignition off.

Well today I attended a large annual bike run in my area.
It's a 2000 bike long traffic jam, so a good chance to put the fan to the test.
It took quite a lot of courage to let the temperature go that high, but yes, you are all correct.
Just a hairs width before the needle hit the red zone the fan kicked in and all was well,
I do like the idea of a fan override switch.
Is there a link on this forum from any of you who have carried out this mod.

In the relay box you find four relays in the front right corner, the front left one of these four is the fan relay.
Tap into the blue/yellow wire, and connect it to ground via a switch.
