I traded my 1994 K1100RS in September 2010 at a local dealership. All service was professionally done during the 3 years I owned it. Crazy expensive spline lube was done 6000 km ago. Bike sat for 4 whole years indoors. I'm considering repurchasing it since it's now available for less than my trade-in price and I secretly still like the beast. My mechanic says "stay away!!!" Serious fuel system problems could cost me thousands. I'd like to attempt my own future maintenance. What do you experts think? Should I or shouldn't I? 4 years seems like a long time to be sitting. Price would be approximately $4000 out the door.

I suppose a good question would be, what did they do to it while at the dealer the last 4 years. Any service work, or just bring it in, wash it and park it..........

Was there anything wrong with it when you traded it?

Only if you replaced the entire fuel system (including tank) with BMW parts...
Your mechanic must be intimidated by rumors about BMWs Smile

If you can distinguish a hammer from a front tire (or tyre) you will find all of the advice and assistance you need to maintain your K. In fact, if you search before you ask, 99 times out of 100, it's already been asked and answered, whatever the question.

I'd say if it's been sitting there for four years, you might have the upper hand in negotiating the price down even further.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Nothing. That was actually the reason I traded it. I paid a certified BMW mechanic $3000 in 3 years to keep it perfectly maintained. I definitely Brought More Wallet.

What further maintenance would I need to do to resurrect it? The dealership would have it certified and therefore it would be running upon pickup.

It would be interesting to see if any petrol had been left in the tank for 4 years. This is a known problem area where the fuel turns the rubber pipework and pump holder to mush.

Plus if there was any water in the tank, either from rain ingress or condensation, it could cause corrosion of the alloy, usually at the seams.

If you are happy with its history, and can get it at a good price, then go for it!

They are not hard to service yourself, and as has been mentioned, there is plenty of help and support to be found.

P.S. Budget for a pair of new tyres, as due to their age they may have gone hard and will not give the grip you expect.

All I can say is I have got an LT spread all over my garage and the information that I have had from these guys has been wonderful, there has not been one problem that I have not solved. My bike is nearly back together. I would not say that I am that good with mechanical things. If I can do it so can you. This site is worth gold.

Thank you everyone for the replies. So here's the scoop. Thinking that the price would be 3999 Canadian funny money for a certified, meaning safetied, all systems go, ready for takeoff k rocket, the dealer clarified by saying, sorry, at that price, it's out the door as is. DEAL BREAKER. I asked, out of curiosity, had my fuel been drained 4 years ago? No. Give them credit for not lying. Also both fork seals are shot. And, I asked if they had drained the battery? Again, no. It appeared as if the cells were dry. On that note, maybe I'll stear clear. But thanks again. You guys are very helpful and I'll still wear my k11og shirt with pride.

At that rate, they are going to have that bike a long, long time... Guess they like looking at it and dusting it.
