To add more fuel to this fire (or tank), I had a thought when Cathy and I were out for a ride yesterday.

As I was at a fuel stop and filling up with it on the centerstand. It occurred to me that even with the flapper and the silver insert removed (did it at HM IV) and filling right up to the tank opening, there still is air space remaining. (the "neck" is actually slightly below the top of the tank)

I wonder if BMW included this air space in their calculations? It isn't usable capacity, but it could be considered tank volume.

When we did the IB1600, one stretch with no fuel stops available was 340k, I managed to get there by cruising steadily at 110kph, but I still don't remember having to put more than 18 litres in although I could be wrong, my memory isn't that good.

Hey Drikko,
Aint the K11 BORING at 110 clicks Rolling Eyes
My K11 gives better fuel consumption than my K75 !!!
I can squeeze 350km from the tank (two up), even at 500ft above level.

Hi, Malcolm,
I've had 2 K1100LT's and 6 different K75's. Both K1100LT's gave better mileage than any of the K75's. The K75's ran (and still run) well on 91 (ROZ) octane unleaded whereas the K1100LT spec calls for 95(ROZ) octane unleaded. I have run both the K1100's on 91 and heard no pinging (pinking) even in the hot summer, but generally I filled the bikes with at least 95.

Open the fuel filler cap. Remove the 4 Phillips screws. Lift the entire assembly off the tank.

Turn the filler over and remove the 3 Phillips screws. Separate the assembly where you just removed the 3 screws. Put the flapper in the trash bin.

Reattach the filler cap to the tank. Done.

I thought the flapper was a US spec device.

+1 for me - but I had wondered if that is because mine is a police spec bike. It has a few other oddities, not the least being a lack of headlight on-off switch.

None of the OZ ones had a headlight on off switch as at that time having the headlight permanently on was part of ADR. I added one on when I added the relays for the headlight/driving light. Not sure what year this was taken out of ADR.

The K100RS I bought last year didn't have the flapper but did have a silver funnel shape that was bolted under the filler.

But the bike does have a headlight off/on switch.

It is Canadian spec.

Hi, Robleyd,
I have an ex-police K75RTP. Here in the USA, the police bikes were, I think, the only ones which were imported WITH the headlight on/off switch. Of course, when the idiots added all the lights, siren, etc., they added a separate switch to turn on/off the lights. So although it came with the on/off switch, it was disabled and a different switch was added. I'm debating changing the switch on the RTP with the (non on/off) switch on my K75A/3 so I can turn the headlight off if I want to.

Thought I would resurrect this thread due to my last trip and some of the comments found here being interesting. This is what I did today.

1. Ran tank almost dry, bike coughed to a stop.

2. Put 1.3 gallons in tank, book says this is when idiot light comes on. made note on where the needle is with this amount, surprisingly very high just and a half notches below half tank indication. Light has never come on this early usually comes on about half way down the red area.

3. Put 1.2 gallons in ( total for 2.5, roughly half a tank) once again surprised about where needle read, closer to 3/4 of tank on gauge.

4. Then put 2.5 gallons in to fill the tank and sure enough came to about quarter inch below lip (flapectomy completed.) gauge read full. could maybe put .3 more in but chose not to. books says capacity is 5.3.
I agree with other posters here closer to 5.

conclusion> even though gauge is not accurate most of time. it is when it counts, close to empty. On mine I figure max of 15 miles when light comes on, but I just use it as last resort.
I placed a sharpie mark on gauge with accurate reads i took.

Sorry for being long winded, thought some might find this interesting.

molerat,

It is possible to adjust the point where the reserve light comes on. That adjustment is within the float assembly itself. The float assembly consists of two circuit cards, one of which has a resistive wire (which drives your fuel gauge) and the other a copper contact pad (which activates the reserve light on the instrument pod). The copper pad card pivots and is adjustable -- able to rotate on the pivot. Rotating the card with a small screwdriver will cause the light to come on earlier (larger reserve) or later (smaller reserve). To make the adjustment, you'd have to remove the float assembly from the tank.

The hand book I have for my 98' K1100LT says (in two seperate sections) that the tank of a K1100 is 22 ltrs and the other 19 litrs. If BMW cannot get it right (or proof read for typos) then who knows for certain.

However I know it holds more than my K75s which took just under 21lt when I filled it following a tank re-spray. The Baglux tankbag harness for the K75s wont fit the K1100 as it is too small. (The handbook for the smaller bike quotes 21lt)

No one has mentioned the fact that the fuel level sensor, fuel pump and fuel filter and associated pipework inside the tank will all take up space and stop the max amount fuel from being filled.

As a matter of interest when the level warning light came on I filled up shortly afterwards and was able to put in just under 18 litres
