Here's what exuberantly shifting into second did for me (and probably a little deferred maintenance)

Anyhow a couple questions

First where did this clip come from? It was loose in the swingarm.

Second, I'm trying to get the swingarm off. The left side pivot came out but I can't get the right to budge, according to my manual you take the three screws out and remove the pivot. It will rotate but not come out.

This is on my sidecar rig, when I got it it had a custom swingarm which did away with the paralever so I'm not really sure what all is different.

Thanks

Mike

I believe that the clip belongs to the front gaiter.

About the RHS pivot...I would Guess that it is dirt and/or corrosion on the
inside that is the reason to the problem...try to get a toothbrush in between
and clean out the dirt.

Mike, is that the snap ring that holds the front boot onto the swingarm?
See #2

As far as the right pivot- I would apply LOTS of heat to the casting around the pivot (think heat gun, not torch). Once it is really warm, apply cold to the pivot then try to move it.

I bolted a box end wrench to the center hole to use as a handle to pull it out.

Good luck!

For some reason my fixed pivot pin does not have the hole in the center

Does the hole serve any purpose other than provide a way to remove the pin?

I'm thinking of drilling and tapping a hole in the center and using my slide hammer bearing puller on it.

BMW have a tool (21-6-660) which screws into a threaded hole in the centre of the OEM part. This is then used to extract and insert the fixed bearing. So tapping a hole and using a slide hammer should work a treat.

Here's what mine looked like after I mangle removed it, with channel locks and a big ass flat blade screw driver, not pretty, i had to replace it.

The inside flat edge was marred up from I assume was the broken u-joint flailing about until I (thankfully) stopped on the roadside.

I feel your pain...

Mike: I think what you have there is a steel busing, the stock ones are aluminum. I have a EML sidecar and they are steel. Is your rig an EML ?

It's an EML Speed 2000

I'm probably going back with an aluminum pivot.

My driveshaft is at Bruno's machine and repair for a rebuild, hopefully will have it back soon.

Mike: I had a driveshaft failure on my 93 K1100RS last year as well. Had to uhaul it over a thousand miles to get home (not cheap). when I took it apart I had the same problem you are having because the end of the pivot pin was beat to hell from the broken drive shaft, but because it was aluminum I was able to muscle it out. I ended up putting another one in as well as a drive shaft tube for $40 used. Good luck..........

Just a quick update on my drive shaft.

I managed to get the swingarm pivot out, drilled and tapped a nole in it and rigged a slide hammer to it. The end had been "mushroomed" by the drive shaft. It took a lot to get it out and the bearing was pretty much ruined by the time I got it apart. So I ended up rplacing both swingarm bearings.

I sent the shatf and final drive to Bruno's Machine and Repair

http://www.brunos.us/

He replaced the driveshaft with one he had on the shelf, also replaced the crown gear bearing and seal.

With the EML steel swingarm its a pain to get the drive shaft splines back together but I finally got it back together with some fresh black paint.

Then while I was there I used a spacer from Summit racing to space the wheel about 1/4 inch to the left, it had been slightly rubbing the swingarm.

Of course after that it touched the left side ABS mount. since the ABS is long gone I took the sawsall to it. (now feel like a television bike builder)

Just before the driveshaft broke I had bought an infrared thermometer to try to get some data on how hot the gas tank would get, to see if a fuel cooler would make any difference. I went ahead and added a cooler to the fuel return line.

Its mounted to the sidecar subframe.

Mike

Mike,

Nice rehab. Looks like your 'car puts quite a load on your drivetrain

I have been thinking of a fuel cooler for a couple years. Wanting to have something warm to hot between my legs doesn't include a gas tank. Laughing

No. I moved and everything is in storage and may have to stay there until we build our home.

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Good morning all….

Glad Mike is back "in business" the rehab looks great! Even though I would never own a sidecar, unless my dog asked me specifically,…and having sentiments akin to SugarHill's re " something hot between the legs"..(i.e.: not gasoline however ) that FUEL COOLER is the cats ass! WHERE did you find it Mike ??

Best regards all…ride safe….// Ernie in NH

Its actually an oil cooler I got from http://www.anplumbing.com/

and some left over braided stainless fuel lines from another project. I used the stainless because it looks good, probably not really required. Its been to chilly out to really get an idea of how well it willl work. This summer should tell the story.

I felt like that until Jake, number two son, was born with cerebal palsey. I built a small trailer to carry his manual wheelchair.

Turns out sidecaars are great fun, I ended up selling my R80 because it never came out of the garage. The GB500 only comes out on "perfect"weather days.

Get! Smile You'd just have to figure out the mounting with out the sidecar subframe right there handy in front of the motor.
