I really doubt that it is your starter. The starter on the early K's is very simple. It is nothing like a car starter. It is only a motor with a toothed shaft on it. It doesn't have a bendix like a car does and the only movement that it does is rotate the shaft when you hit the start button. When you get the clank does it quit turning the engine over? Does the headlight go out?

Yes. "Clank" then it stops cranking engine over. It's a very metal sounding clank too.

Battery is fully charged.

Can you shift it into 2nd or 3rd and turn over the engine?

If so, then try to get the motor to just move. Then, while in gear, no clutch, bump it backwards a little. You will feel the resistance. Just bump it back & bounce it a couple times. Not to hard. Just a gentle bump.
Then shift to nuetral & try to start it.

If you get the same sound, then pull the plugs, make sure they are grounded and see if it will turn over.
