The manual says to change oil at operating temperature.
I can understand why the engine should be at operating temperature to drain the oil but does this also mean I should run the engine up to temperature before bringing the oil level up to the correct level in the sight glass when completing the oil change.
If this is the case should I just top up the oil level at the end of a days ride while the bike is still hot instead of waiting for it to cool off and the oil to drain back into the sump ( I use about 300ml each 1000km)

These brick engines are notorious for hiding oil after having been run and are still warm to hot. You should only check oil level after the engine has cooled down- probably best to do it before a ride.

When I change the oil I make sure the engine is warm and after removing the drain plug and the filter I let it sit draining for a while.

Gidday,

Packo while reading your post I seriously was starting to think you were asking if...
Do you run the engine up to temp, minus the old oil and then add the new oil once warm. I was sitting here about to scream NO!!

There's a couple of advantages to getting the bike up to operating temperature before changing the oil:

1) It stirs up the oil and more of the "dirt" in the engine gets suspended in the oil you're about to drain out.

2) Warm oil flows better and you'll get slightly more of the old oil out at a quicker drain rate.

That said, it's not 100% required. The important thing is that you're changing the oil.

Topping off: Warm the engine up, put it on the center stand (it should be already though) and let it sit for at least 15-30 minutes before topping it off.

Between changes I usually top it off immediately before the next ride.
