Hi Ya'll
first post. Looking to maybe buy a K1100.
I live in the PNW (Seattle) where its cold and wet.
I need heated gear (old person) and a fairing
I have a naked 78GL 1000 with all Led's - not looking to do that to the Lt
Tell me its a 450 watt stator or somesuch!!

Depends on the year. 92 is 460 watts, 93+ is 700 watts. Max current is 33 amps for 92, 50 amps 93+. It is possible to upgrade a 92 with a newer alternator. _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.

looking good so far.
Any thing else I should check on / ask about?
It has 40k ish on the clock. Glowing review from the seller .... hates to get rid of it doesn't ride it enough...
It is a long distance sorta deal.
I just can't go around the corner and take a look.
Probably going to be a fly and ride or I'll have it shipped. |

A 95 has a 50A alternator and plenty of extra juice. I run heated gear and grips with two 70W aux lights on a 50A alternator with no issues.
What part of Seattle are you in? (I lived there for 55 years until I moved to Hood Canal a few years ago.) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

And when you need new tires be sure to install radials instead of the bias ply tires that it came with from the factory. It will ride and handle TONS better with radial tires. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

The K is low on rubber according to the seller. I just made contact and a few email exchanges to let him know I was very interested before he went out of town for a bit. I don't know what tires he has on it. If I do a fly and ride (when the weather is conducive) I will have tires put on. If I have it shipped I'll do it here. Got a recommendation for a good tire? I know a a little bit about older goldwings, own 78 naked GL1000 but nothing about kbikes. I have sorta gathered they are pretty reliable and affordable compared to other well sought after BMW's They seem to be an acquired taste.
I have been smitten and have always liked the classic 70's80's airhead r100rt's but they are a little more bones and I dont see any around this neck of the woods at the moment. There was a r80rt on CL but the folks inherited the bike. It sat for awhile. They couldn't get it started and took it somewhere to have it looked at. Ka-Ching. That and the stock elec. output isn't all that. Might have been ok if I could have gotten the put it in the back of my truck price.
I need something a bit more long distance travel oriented as in comfortable. No more Goldwings though. _________________ 78 GL 1000 naked. |

Tires:
Bridgestone BT31: 110/80-18 front, 150/70-17 rear. The rear is "off-sized" but works quite well on the 3x17 rear wheel.
If you weight as much as a house then you might want to consider getting the GT version but they're really not necessary if you're just riding 1-up, even fully loaded.
Other options:
Pirelli Angel GTs: They're OK but in my experience they get squirrelly on warm tar snakes and not a tire that I really trust.
Michelin Pilot Roads:
Also a very good tire but no better or worse than the BT31s and cost more.
R bikes are "classic" BMWs but the Ks are just plain better. I can easily outride somebody on an R1150 with a K1100LT. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

So tell us where the bike is located. Perhaps one of us can go look at it for you. Last time I saw someone buy a bike sight unseen things did not go well. Buyer was way too short to ride a K1100, feet dangling like a kid on a carnival horsey. That's now my bike. Got a great deal.  _________________ To err once is human. I still haven't heard back. I sent another msg. but don't want to be a pest.
Sheesh. The last two bikes I was really interested in have died on the communication vine. I don't hear back when I'm told I would.
So either they change their mind and don't want to sell or decide there is too much interest and take it off the market. Then later its re-listed at a higher$. Or they try to start it and cant, only to end up taking it to a mechanic. Then a nice bike at an affordable price becomes questionably a lot more. Who knows. Its the holidays too so there is that.
Either way the $ is ready and willing to be spent.
The longer it goes the doubt starts to creep in though and I start looking again.

Update:
Looks like this deal may go down after all.
I had to roust him out. A little distracted maybe but says he's ready to sell.
I offered a deposit - said not needed I have first dibs.
So I'm waiting on some more close up and detailed pics.

What do ya all think? $2300 seems fair KBB is more. The thought crossed my mind to offer $2k - tires.
Looks to be in good shape but the devil is in details am I right?
I think the guy is done with it but might not want to dicker.
The one thing I'm curious about is why it hasn't sold. He listed it 11/15.
I didn't see it on the local CL so he might want to keep it in the family so to speak. I don't know.
So I've read some owners/riders think they can be a little buzzy, hot
and maybe top heavy.
Kinda depends on the person right?
I know I'm preachin to the choir but checking nonetheless.
I ran across this k75 locally but it is a LOT more $.

It has been gone through - records and receipts. new paint.
I don't think it would be a wash by the time I go get the other bike pay tax/license/tires and ride it home but it might get close. I like the bigger bike though.

Is that chip just a plug and play sort of thing or does it need tools and knowhow? Its all in German. Nothing in English?
I'm 5'10. I had a 83 Goldwing interstate. It fell over more than once.
Its all about balance and not letting it get away from ya right?
Once it did there was not stopping it. I got it up by myself a couple times. I'd need help now.
Hopefully the k bike is a little more forgiving. Might be lighter. the GW was over 800lbs. with bags and fairing I think. _________________ 78 GL 1000 naked. |

The seller of the chip speaks and writes perfect English. All you need is a torx wrench for the screws on the Motronic box and a knife to carefully cut the silicon glue seal. You will also need a small flat screwdriver to carefully pry the old EEPROM and then you push the new one in, carefully again. Close the box with a little sealant to keep it waterproof, reinstall the screws and hook it up on the bike. Done.
I'm 5'10" and had to buy a Wilbers shortened rear shock to get a handle on the tipping over. It's not about your total height, it's about the length of your legs. The K bike is not more forgiving. You have to really pay attention and not let it even try to start to tip. It's just as difficult to get upright on your own too. I can barely do it. Barely.
it can also get away from you when rolling it off the center stand. I found the trick to be to put it in 1st gear and extending the side stand before taking it off the center stand. Much easier to control. Don't be shy about using the side stand. It looks like it might tip over, but it won't.
The dry weight of a K1100LT is advertised at 765 lbs. That feels like a lie but I've never tested the theory. _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.

That's cool but the ebay site is in German I can't get around. For another time anyway.
