|

Recently finished a full service of my 94 RS before I take it down to CA. Last item was to sync the throttle bodies. Turning the #1 air bypass screw dindu nuffin.
Being lazy, I decided not to diagnose the problem and just assumed that the rubber boot between the throttle body and intake was leaking air. So I ordered four new ones from Max and installed them. Now it syncs up like a champ so it appears that my guess diagnosis was correct.

Good diagnosis. That would have been a little expensive guess had it not been the problem. Frankly, I am surprised their only $33 each. The rubber dampeners for the handlebars are $38 each and not nearly as complex. _________________ 1973 Honda CL70-K3, 1975 Kawasaki 350 F9-C, 1983 Kawasaki KZ750-K1, 1994 BMW K1100RS, 2008 Suzuki GSX1300-BKK8 #1120 |

Actually, in hindsight, I probably didn't need to replace the intake manifolds. It's the rubber boots that get old and leak, not the intake manifolds. The intake manifolds are made of relatively thick hard plastic and unlikely to crack and leak unless they're really, really old and this bike only has 63K so the current ones were still in good shape. However, since I'd already purchased them and had them on hand I installed new ones anyhow.
Again, since I'm lazy, even though BMW manual recommends disconnecting all of the crap from the throttle bodies and removing the throttle bodies I was able to replace the manifolds and boots without having to remove the throttle bodies. I did that when I rehab'd my K1 and it was a lot of work.
The picture below is from K1 rehab. On this K1100RS install I did not remove the throttle bodies like this.
By starting at #4 and moving forward I was able to get the manifolds and boots off with the throttle bodies in place. Then I started at #1 and moved back to replace them.
There's three parts between the throttle bodies and cylinder head:
1. Manifolds 4 11611461621 $32.80 $131.20
3. O-rings: 4 11611465169 $3.20 $12.80
5. Boots: 4 11611461739 $14.44 $57.76
The next time I do this (on my 93 LT) I'll just replace the O-rings and boots.
I also don't like the Oetiker clamps used at the tops of the boots so I replaced those with 5/16" wide stainless hose clamps. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

If you think that's expensive the ABS sensors now cost over $300 each:

That's the sensor I mistakenly bought thinking it was for the speedo, and wanted to trade for the right sensor, but I already found a speedo pulse generator pulled from a bike with 36k miles, $29.95 on eBay. _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.
