You guys are great! I found it!

It was lodged between the frame rail and the frame support. Not under any tape...filled with dirt. So I cut open the wiring harness unnecessarily.

Plugged it in, they work fine.

Dealer...Hah, it has not been to a dealer yet, and probably never will. Except for maybe the ABS light thing, but that is another story.

On a separate issue, what wire would I tap to trip a relay if I want my driving lights to come on when I hit the brights?

Thanks for everyone's advice
Joe

White wire from the left switch connector is where I usually do it.

(Yellow for low beams.)

This has come up before repeatedly - any way you could measure and/or take a pic or two for it's exact location?

I think that's why some come taped Wink

It's a T connector with a green/black wire and brown wire. It's usually near the rear area under the left side of the tank. It looks like this.

I’ve read all the posts and seen that photo but can’t find the connector so where do you think it is in my photo?

If the bike did not have HGs from the factory then it may be taped off to one of the clumps of wires.

OK, I'm definitely tired of looking for this damn plug - I've seen others struggling to locate it and ultimately being successful but I've still drawn a blank.

Here's a photo after I've tried to get into the loom and you can see a green/black wire at the top and it feeds through to a 2 pin plug with a grey/red wire and then heads up towards the headstock where I lose sight of it.

I've put the bike back together as need to use it tomorrow but thinking maybe I can get to the green/black wire behind the instruments and take the live feed from there - any thoughts on doing that?

TIA

I'd tap into one of green/black wires coming from the #1 Fuse - the top fuse. That's where the power for heated grips comes from.

Thanks, so can I tap into that green/black wire that’s heading up to the headstock and any idea where it terminates?

Fuse #1 is switched power to:

1 - Bulb monitor unit
2 - Brake switches
3 - Heated grips
4 - Fuel & Temp gauges

Not trying to piss in your cornflakes Chris, but it's too bad your "gift" wasn't an aftermarket set of heated grips.

Most people with the BMW set have had a failure and one failure even let to a meltdown of the entire wiring harness.

I think you might be safe because of redesign and the newness of it. (most failures were caused by flimsy design out of the gate and 15+ years of use)

Totally incorrect. I have had numerous BMW's fitted with the factory option of heated grips and never had one set fail. It sounds as if you are biased so why bother with BMW go and get one of the oriental offerings that may suit you perfectly.

I think one reason that there's so few HG failures is that many people don't use the low setting much. The only time I ever had the HG wiring fail was a day when I had them on the low setting for about half an hour. Before that I don't think that I'd ever used the low setting, just high.

I make variable controllers for my HGs now but I think if you stay with the factory switch it's a good idea to snip the orange wire from the switch to ensure you won't ever have the problem.

I did have a failure several years ago on my '92 K-RS.

Fixed it with a set of Oxford HG with 5 position LED switch.

I don't use my low setting on my K as it still has the factory setup.
On my R, I've installed aftermarket HG elements and am not afraid of using low setting with them.
More often then not, my Gerbing gloves are plenty warm enough without using my grips anyway....

I eventually got round to wiring in the heated grips and thought splicing into the green/black wire running up to the front brake switch would be a good spot, especially when I realised someone had already cut into it before me!

This is the previous handiwork and you can just see the same wires going into the brake switch under the reservoir at the top of the photo but I can't figure out why someone would have cut into the wiring at this point - anyone know what the looped blue wire is for?

Anyway I tidied up the previous solders and connected power to the OEM heated grip switch from here. Everything else went smoothly and now I have heated grips so just waiting for the weather to turn cold!
