My 1997 K1100LT fuel warning light is lit at ~160 miles. I get 40mpg. With a 5.8 gal tank it seems way too premature. Any adjustments available?
I know I can probably ignore until ~200-mi on trip odo, but would rather see something more reasonable.

Have fun,
Jer

Has it always been like that? How about the gauge? Does it work properly? Or is it off?

The gauge can be adjusted by bending the float arm. Not sure how the light is triggered - but it must be related to the float somehow.

My K always ran out at 239 - 240 US miles - that was on a full tank with the flapper removed.

160 is about normal for a K.

You can adjust when the fuel light comes on without bending the float rod. (Which is tempered and very hard to bend.)

You need to remove the fuel level sender from the tank and turn this little cogged wheel.

Bearing in mind a UK Gallon is quite a bit more than a US one. This about just over half a litre, and the UK gallon is 4.546 litres to the gallon. I can get about 220 miles (give or take) from a full tank before it gets a bit too close for comfort and in danger of running out of fuel. The nominal 22 litre tank = 4.84 UK Gallons

I believe the fuel gauge/sensor light is set to come on when there is around 5 litres left in the tank so bearing in mind these bikes were made in Europe where the litre is the standard measure, not the gallon either UK or US one. I get around 12 miles per litre which is pretty good. Once the light comes on I know I have to fill up within the next 50 miles before I have to avoid a long hard push.

Thanks you all so much for your replies. At least I now know it's a 'normal' condition and should have no issues riding to the 200-mi mark while thinking of filling up.

Have fun,
Jer

5 litres to be counted as the reserve, is just about 1.1 UK gallons which depending on how active you use the twist grip should give you around 60 miles give or take after the warning light comes on.

I don't vary too much on how I use the "twist grip". Always watching the tach
for smooth shifting. Over 4K RPM is minimum. Light touch up on the shift bar
and a touch of the clutch produces a very smooth transition. She moves along
quite nicely for my riding style. I very much agree with what is in reserve and
letting the warning light burn a bit before finding fuel.

Thanks!
Jer
