im thinking the 24" would require a splice to make it to the bottom of the side panels... at least the rs side panels if i remember correctly....

ch1t... i dont remember the width... i think it was 34".... i dont know for sure... sorry...

24 should be fine. I cut mine to 22x33 squares before trimming them. It won't make it to the very bottom of the side covers but is more than emough to cover the seam and divert the air out the bottom. So 24" wide material should be fine.

Friends,

The $20 Home Depot roll worked out great. The 24" width of the roll is perfect for a K1100LT.

First I cut out a 24"x44" piece and laid it out along the length of the bike.

Then I made cut outs for the tank clips and the "cup" that catches any fuel overflow. Also cut a "slot" for the fuel pump connector.

The tank is moved to the side in the above picture (to the right of the picture) the silver foil you are seeing on the bottom of the tank is what came with the bike.

Finally I made a cut out to hook up the side panel. The blanket tucked neatly behind the K-Guard Heat Shields

I used some Reflectix tape to make things tidy. This tape is also heat reflective and sold right next to the blanket at Home Depot.

I've only had a couple of short rides so far but I'm very happy with the results. The Johnny Blanket works as advertised

Took about 20 minutes to put together.

i put the foil down... the bubbles up...

thinking the foil would reflect the heat away...

the bubbles would help attenuate the heat that made it past the foil... and not melt of course...

since there are no seams and only 1 hole for the fuel pump wires... the whole thing prevents hot air from flowing where i dont want it...

now i gotts abouts 5,000 miles on it... no melting noted and still in good shape... there are some popped bubbles where the seat contacts the frame and the like...

so far so good...

For the Bubble wrap boys - I have had the same heat soak problem with round-town riding - the heat has been so bad soaking up between the side panels and the seat that I have actually burned the inside of my kegs while wearing jeans. I just yesterday installed a pad of insulated material scavenged from the firewall of a new GM pickup - covered the space under the seat and closed off the gaps between the side panels and the seat. Noticeable difference today. I may try the Home depot stuff as a permanent cure but the insulation really worked well for a no-cost fix. This stuff is like fiberglass insulation sandwiched between to peices of nylon-like black cloth.

Actually we have a wrecked one in our shop so I just 'borrowed' a piece of it.
2600 production jobs gone by the time they close it - my son is an engineer in the development centre there and they have also let almost 100 engineering staff go (he's OK for now) so it's tough times for sure.
With gas at $1.35/litre ($5.13/US Gallon) it's no wonder they're parking the big SUVs and trucks- that's for regular - Premium is 10 cents a litre more!
I've actually been riding the K11RS to work to save money but it's been really hot here for the past week - hence the search for heat relief on the RS.

I appreciate the forum - great place to share ideas!

Curious, why do you have to extend the heat blanket so far past the tankline? Wouldn't you think as long as the frame under the tank with a bit of overlap to the electrical box would be enough? I had to buy the big roll, so I'll try it and see.

i never really got the roast some folks talk about... but my seat would always get hot and juice up my bung...

that is why i went from the steering head to the tail light... trying to keep the heat away from the bottom of the seat...

now dont get me wrong... i like a juicy bung... just not mine...

I just tried out the foil-bubble wrap heat shield deal, and it works quite well. Although it appears to not stop every bit of the radiant heat, it does block a lot of it. I'll give this idea two thumbs up for making hot summer riding much mo'better down here in stinkin' hot Austin, Texas.
