First to be honest a confession - I do not yet own a BMW, But have always wanted, and thought this a good place to ask. I've been riding for almost 20 years, but all old hondas.
I'm in Berkeley CA for the next month for work, I have some free time after, and would love to get something out here and ride it back to Chicago. I have never been a full dress bike type of guy and I love the look of the RS but but I really want something more upright for longer rides, so thus the LT, although I have not actually been on one yet (again confession)
I know they're big and I'm not tall - 5'6" but....
My budget is ideally under $2400 and I'd really rather do less to have room for unexpected. I'm checking out craigslist here but thought I'd see if anyone has some beauty they're not actually using anymore that they want to give a second life (and a great deal) to. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated,

Here's a couple to ponder. The first is a K75, which is in CA and might be easier for you to handle. Remember the K1100LT's are all at least 20 years old. Be careful of a bike that has set for a long period, if you can't do the maintenance yourself it can get expensive.

The second is an R bike, ex-police. There are those in our midst that worship them.

You might check with Duck up North, maybe he knows of an LT for sale.

You could fly back east to Pittsburgh, buy my '93 LT then ride it back to Chicago. Mine is in your price range.

It's a little delayed, but just wanted to say thanks to the replies. I got caught up with some work here ( the reason I'm actually out here) and put the search on hold but then went exploring and I think I now have a bike! I'll post a pic later.
