|
|
Some of you may have seen this last week on Fleabay. It's a Cold Weather/Winter kit for the RS, but the PO modded it to fit the LT.
(the "mod" is just a pair of small notches on a inner edge of the kit).
I had never seen one of these kits on a K11, and the photos on the auction were kinda' misleading, in a good way for once, and the price was very reasonable, so I bought it.
The kit has 4 parts, two on each side; an upper and a lower. They are attached to the very edge of the fairing and extend the width of the bike outwards to keep windblast from freezing you.
Well I figured they would be an inch or two wide at most; I wasn't prepared for the huge box that arrived today. The parts were very heavy, made of very thick rubber and weighed about 10lbs for the set!
The kit will probably add 6-8 inches to the fairing width!!
I'll have to remove the windshield motor assembly, fairing inner liners (?), and DRILL apprx 16 new holes in the fairing... FUN!
I'll post some pics tomorrow when the sun is out!!

The thing I find most annoying about the LT fairing is that it doesn't protect your feet from the cold very well like the K75RT and K100RT fairings do. I saw a hardcore Iron Butt bike at the dealer one day where the owner had fashioned some little flaps out of tire flap material to protect the feet. Looked like a good idea to me. One of our Larry's here now owns that bike.
I use heated insoles these days so haven't gotten around to doing that yet. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I just try and keep my feet a little further back on the foot pegs. Not ideal but I haven't gone the route of the heated insoles yet. _________________ Ride safe.

We seem to have a never ending winter here in Michigan. I'm going to fab something and it would be great to to actually have to invent it. _________________ 1993 K1100LT

I thin I've got some pics on my desktop PC at home. I'll try to remember to look it up. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

This is the oddest thing I have ever put on any bike (and I work at a motorcycle dealer's service dept). The size of my fairing has grown by a multiple of 1.5--I can't wait to ride it tomorrow!! Enjoy!!

Well, took out the LT this morning to test the fairing. HOLY TOLEDO! There is absolutely NO wind that can wrap itself around the fairing; the combination of my CeeBailey oversize screen and the Winter Kit is amazing!
The bike is even more top-heavy now, and I have to open my stance ever so gingerly at a stop, but once moving, it's crazy how quiet and calm the cockpit is. The only real drawback I've encountered is that the frontal cross section is so massive, I can feel the bike straining against sudden windgusts and the windblast off the side of large trucks.

Just don't be supprised if you also start cooking this summer when riding on those 90+ deg days. _________________ Ride safe.

Good luck! I have never seen or heard of such a kit, until now. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Yeah, I thought about the heat issue too. I rarely use the LT in the hot months, unless it's an open-road ride. The K12RS is my commuter... _________________ 2003 BMW K1200RS
