|
|
The local authorities are trialling some bike friendly crash barriers on a hills road with a fairly high rider attrition rate, not far from where I live - the Gorge Road, for those who know Adelaide .
So I thought I might take a ride out there, going the long way round of course [1] and take a few photos, as someone on the Ausmoto news group had asked about the stuff.
This is the only BMW related image; there are a few other images in more detail at http://robley.net.au/bmw/armco.html if you are interested in the actual barrier. Effectively, it is some thick plastic sheet screwed over conventional Armco, extending down to ground level to stop things going under the Armco rail and stop you hitting the posts.
[1] The hills road that eventually leads to this place (among others) starts less than a mile from where I live.
Edit: apparently the Gorge Road is noted as one of the World's Best Rides, along with (among others) the Dragon. http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/travel/holiday-ideas/get-your-motor-running/story-e6freznr-1225928877971 and gets a good writeup at http://www.insuremyride.com.au/imr/bike-stuff/road-bikes/rides/south-australia-gorge-road-head-hills I figure there are other roads around here that are right up there, but if I tell you where they are, I'll have to kill you _________________ David, owner of:

Interesting. At least your government is aware of a danger to bikes.
In the U.S. we are the forgotten "motorists". The most obvious concession to bikes are signs that warn of grooved pavement (not much of a danger with ribbed tires becoming obsolete)
Then there is the ongoing battle that is trying to get motorcycle use limited or banned in New York City- one of the most automobile congested cities in our country.
So good work Australia- for being bike friendly. _________________ John & Cathy

That's what is funny - peculiar, not ha-ha - about our lot; on the one hand they are trialling this stuff in a motorcycle 'risk' area ,and elsewhere, as in Qld, cheese cutter barriers are being installed. Miles of the bloody things. _________________ David, owner of:

Actually Rob, last night I went for a spin around Springbrook and Canungra and they have fitted a lot of those barriers under the armco, so I take my comment back! Still seeing the cheese cutters along the freeways though. _________________ K1100RS '97

I was on my way home from Robina to Brisbane, didn't feel like coping with the freeway of death in peak hour so took all the backroads, turned a 100km 1 hr trip into a 200km 3hr trip Had a ball _________________ K1100RS '97
