|
|
Now that Spring has arrived here in Northern VT, I have been riding to work and loving it.
New noise surfaced Tuesday afternoon after my ride home. I shut the bike off and immediately heard a very high pitched squeal that lasted for about three seconds. The bike was at normal temp when I switched it off.
I restarted it and it would not repeat. The next day the sound repeated on shutoff when I got to work. Did not repeat at the end of the day.
Today I filled the tank full from 1/4 and haven't been able to repeat the noise although I made about five trips top various places about ten miles apart.
Any ideas on what is coming my way?

Fuel pump maybe?? Fuel cools the pump so low fuel conditions will result in a warmer pump and possibly expansion in the impeller region caused the noise. _________________ - Robert

Sounds like our noisey fuel pumps that do not like to run on low tanks.
Could also be a bit of vacuum pressure if your tank vent lines are not breathing properly.

Monty:
My noise comes ony after I shut the bike off. And then does not always occur. If the damn rain hadn't returned, I would be out running it, trying to figure it out.
Thanks to the others who replied, it sounds like a pressure bleed-off might be the culprit, but it stops abruptly without changing pitch like a bleed-off would.

Nick, the next time you hear it try and open the top of the filler cap and see if that relieves it.
Like Steve suggested it could be a vacuum lock in the tank not venting.
Another possibility could be the fuel system pressure bleeding off. The system runs around 35-42 psi pressure. It could be leaking back thru the fuel pump where it's not supposed to, or the fuel pressure regulator could be releasing it back to the tank.
I can't say as I have heard either of mine make any noise after I turn it off. I have had the usual pump whine when low of fuel. _________________ Ride safe.

Scott;
You hit the nail with your suggestion. I got between raindrops yesterday and when the ride ended, I waited to shut the engine off until I was in a position to quickly open the filler cap. The noise quit abruptly with a rush of air (in or out). All I have to do now is trace through the ventery stuff and find out what's going on.
Thanks for the help, guys.

Nick - the tank has two vent tubes/nipples at the right rear. One is the rain drain - the hole to the left side of the filler cap. The other is the tank vent - I forget which is which. If you still have hoses connected to the drain and the vent, you could have nothing worse than a kinked hose.
The hose that is routed to the front of the engine may have a small, gray check valve - if it does, you can remove that.
If the hoses aren't connected, and you have an air accumulator, the culprit is something else - but very likely vent related.
If you don't have an air accumulator, the best thing to do is install one, cap off the nipple on the front of the engine, and have one tube from the accumulator that comes out at the back of and just below the right peg plate. _________________ Jim
