I am doing the seals on my '93 K1100LT and installing boots. My question is can I use either regular or synthetic oil in the front forks? Any particular brand recommended?
Thanks, Brent _________________ '93 K1100 LT

Yes, you can use dino or synth.
FWIW, I use Honda SS-8 10W. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I haven't noticed any difference in brand, have used whatever is convenient to get on the way home. Always 10W though, agree on that. _________________ K1100RS '97

The Honda stuff was recommended to me by a friend I trust and has always worked well for me so I stick with it. From what I've read in "oil threads" fork oil weights vary by manufacturer so 10W from one company is not necessarily the same as 10W from another company. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I'm pretty satisfied mixing half 5# and half 10# from Spectro. _________________ '93 K1100LT

|
|
Since we are discussing fork oil .... I would like your opinions. I just drained and replaced my fork oil with Mobil-1 (100% synthetic) ATF oil. It rides much better than the 10w fork oil I just drained out. The old fork oil was in the forks only about 6 months; but when I drained it ... it was really dirty looking. I have heard that ATF oil has very good lubrication and cleaning qualities.
The ride is quite firm, but not as harsh as the previous 10w oil ( Maxima or some brand like that .. it wasn't BMW brand)
WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?
I know some Honda models actually recommend ATF oil to be used in their forks. _________________ 1997 K1100-LT

I think I would probably go with what Drake says, and if the ride were harsh maybe mix it with a bit of 5wt from the same manufacturer. I used the BMW stuff in my K11, but as I remember it was about three times the price of comparable stuff. Matter of fact I think I still have a liter of the 7.5wt in my fluids box from circa 1998 -- think it is still good? _________________

| I had to renew the seals. It took a lot of washing out to get rid of the 'swarf' at the bottom of the tubes. |

Hi, Ted,
I use the BMW 7.5 wt. fork oil. It works for me. I think your 7.5 wt. fork oil from circa 1998 would be fine. I still have a can (metal!) of Castrol 10wt. fork oil which I bought for my Dunstall-Norton back in the early 1970's and never used. _________________ Ride Safe,

If the fork is a bit soft with 10W, mix with some 15W. _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.
