I can't recall if I mentioned here before, that I was worried my water/oil seal was giving up the ghost a few months ago. Well 2 weeks ago, it did.
Went to the ibmwr.org pages, looked up the -2- tutorials on how to fix it, ordered my parts, and then discovered that they have changed yet again the design of the water seal. Add to that, that my bike has the older male threaded rod instead of the recessed female threads, which would fit the bolt I bought before I tore everything open.
After improvising a new water seal installation technique involving a 19mm deep socket and a hammer, I am happy to report that it's all working just fine - moving fluids and not leaking any.
Had to replace the front rotors again - the ones I put on at HM 2010 cracked again on me. The brake bolt from New Zealand is still holding up nicely.
Doing such work myself, and not paying the Hun for the pleasure, makes me just feel so manly. I'm sure most of you are used to it, but I'm still on the front end of the learning curve with this stuff.

It's very satisfying to fix or repair something yourself and thinking about the $80 an hour shop rate your saving.
Plus it let's you better understand the bike and feel more comfortable fixing other items.

Chris,
Think I have the start of an oil/water pump seal failure going on on my "new" '92 K-RS. Mine can probably wait until next winter.

According to shogs, it might be the drive shaft U-joint. I'll tear it open this weekend and have a look around. Wish me luck.

remember that with us gearheads half the battle is confidence,,,i can't count the times i have pulled something apart and fixed it without ever having seen the inside of one,,eg,sterndrives,,outboards,rotary engines (never do this one),etc.etc, just the confidence and you're half way there,and with the internet nothing is too distant,,when i was a tadpole with my first chevy (ps ford man here)1963 impala SS,and took it to a shop for a "tune up"as i was heading off to a logging camp for 21 days(fly in),,when i got back there was a tall bill for me as they had taken it upon themselves to "fix" the turn signal indicator that needed to be held down for one direction of turn and i said "that will never happen again"hence the birth of a gearhead,,now when one of my girls calls after an absence of a week or two i say" hey something wrong with your car" and they say "i knew you'd say that",,wonder if i should have let the shops do the work??

It's not the U, or the shaft. It's forward of that in the transmission housing.
Shogs and Steve are offering to tear down and help, but I gotta get it there first. That might take a few days, or a whole hell of a lot of driving to go get their trailer first.
But this is time and money I don't have right now, and I'm stressing about this and a thousand other things. I just wanna puke.

Got it over to the garage today, and the dominant thinking is either input or output shaft from the trans. Time to order one and see what I can do to help get it all back together in running order.
