I seem to have a problem with the starter on my K1100 LT, have taken the switch assembly off and cleaned with contact spray but bike still only fires afer about 10 presses of the button. Also, because gear position indicator is not functioing correctly then I need to have clutch in to start, have heard gear postion indicator requires swing arm removal to complete so am not that keen to do at the moment as need the bike for everyday transport.

Any help on starter swich greatly appreciated, presumably the switch just operates a servo located elsewhere on the bike before firing the starter? I guess it could be a loose connection somewhere but wheres best to start looking? also can i take switch completely apart - there are small phillips screws on inside of switch.

I'm going to guess you may have a starter to clean and to refit with new brushes. Hopefully not, maybe it's like you say with the starter button.

Ok, lets see if I understand, "it take ten presses of the starter button for the bike to fire". Does this mean that the starter turns the motor over but the motor does not start, or does this mean that you have to press the button ten time before the starter motor runs???? The button only engages the starter relay, in the relay box under the seat. If the starter runs but the engine does not start you will be looking for different things. Please clarify so that we can point you in the right direction.

I think the problem is with the connection to the relay, the starter doesnt turn - all is dead on several presses of the button until all of a sudden the bike will start.

Ok, you will need to pullup the tank. I don't remove mine I just lift it up so I can get to the relay box cover. I put a block of wood or card board box anything handy to hold the tank up at the back and out of my way. The starter relay on my k1100LT is in the rear right corner of the box, has two separate heavy wires, one black goes down to the starter and the red comes from the battery, and two light wires in a single plug. One brown with a blue tracer and black with a yellow tracer. The black/yellow should show battery voltage when the starter button is pushed. If not then the problem is up stream from the starter button. The brown/blue goes to the motronic relay, the side stand switch and then to ground. If there is power at the black/ yellow when you push the button. Take a piece of wire and strip back both ends a little, use this as a jumper, between the brown/blue and a good ground while pushing the starter button. If there is no action out of the starter, then check the voltage at the heavy black wire when the starter button is pushed, no voltage, change the relay. If there is voltage remove the starter for a good cleaning/over haul.
