FUN, FUN, FUN. Pennies to maintain- sure it is........just LOTS OF THEM
The quote for a BMW certified mechanic to do this was north of 90,000 pennies. So I am doing it for about 30,000 pennies.
The "O" ring may have been an O, but it gave up being rubber a long time ago- upper right hand in this picture. I had already cleaned the clutch disc in this picture. The bell housing was soaked in oil and friction plate dust- lovely combo.

I've just done this job, last week in fact. Had the clutch changed by a local man 2 years ago because i couldn't be bothered who at the time told me my rear main seal was ok and he just changed the friction plate. Within about 9 months it started to slip again then the stand bracket started to collect oil. So I finally got fed up with it saved up the £300.00 and took 3 days off work plus a little help from a mate stripped it down and changed everything going on the basis that it was 14 years old and while it's apart do it right. The rear main was ok and as you've found out it was the perished o'ring allowing oil along the splines which then covered the whole of the clutch.
The job took me about 10 hours to strip down, change the seals, rebuild, refit gearbox, alternator, starter and ABSII modulator then bleed the brakes on the first day and then about 4 hours to finish putting the battery, pannier frames, exhaust and towbar on plus a major service on the second day.
I took it out for a test ride on the third day and it feels great, at 40mph in top crack the throttle open and i had to lean forward to keep the front wheel on the road whey hey my love for the bike was born again and i'll stop looling at other options as there's nothing wrong with this one.
Hope your rebuild goes ok, my dread was the ABSII as the last lot of ABS bleeding I had to do on an ABSI system was a real PITA but ABSII was really easiey and didn't take long at all. _________________ Fat Ba***d with a K1100LTse

Technician,
Fortunately I did not have to open either brake line.
Left side (front brake) modulator stayed in place- hanging it from the left side frame.
The right side unbolted and I could swing it all up out of the way as a unit.
Just a few hours left to re-assemble.......

You must have ABSI then as your modulators sit either side of the frame whereas ABSII unit sits on top of the gearbox next to the battery.
Believe me if your clutch was slipping even slightly in top gear like mine then it will be like a new lease of life and very much worth it.
While you've got it all stripped down are you going to change the needle roller bearings in the clutch arm and fit the grease nipple mod, I did and the lever operation is nice and light now. _________________ Fat Ba***d with a K1100LTse

It is back together and it actually runs. What a flippin' surprise.
Tomorrow promises good weather- will give it a run 2-up and go out to dinner for our wedding anniversary.
If you see a parts for sale notice- you will know how it went!
But for now, it lives.

My story is similar. 100,000 miles on it, 14 years old. K1100LT.
I am worried that i might drop it on the floor once it is off of the center stand.
AND it has been hot.
Looks like I need to have some muffler shop weld the #1 tube where it enters the collector. Any advice on this?? _________________ 97 K1100LT le (Kaw lady) with 119,000 miles. |

Congrats for taking this on & thanks for sharing the pictures.
If you have more pictures of the steps involved in taking it apart I'd really appreciate it.
I've had to pay for clutch twice & next time I'd like to take it on myself but am a little intimidated.

Not uncommon, and usually any weld will break again.
I had 2 broke and went with a Remus instead. _________________ Ride safe.

I had a buddy with a MIG Welder fix mine for me. His first time welding stainless, too. He had a scrap piece in his junk pile and added it as a gusset to strengthen the area. Seems to have done the trick. _________________ '02 - GL1800
