i have a 1996 K11LT and it sometimes sounds a bit noisy especially when warm but not a big noise from some specific location. i thought this could be from the output shaft which i also thought has a large coil spring shock absorber on it. but clymer shows rubber bushings instead.
Question; is it correct these are what will be in there? Was there a model with a coil spring damper there?
if so any ideas of a likely source of rattly noise.
i had a look at the timing chain guides and all seemed ok in there.
Otherwise the beast is going well with 67k on the clock, new clutch because i was in there having a look and fixed the start of leakage past the output shaft seal, and oil consumption static at a sight glass full every 750 miles or so.
At present i'd like to make it quieter but it's not bad enough to justify a strip down on spec.
Any ideas/suggestions people?
Tony. |

This may not be in the area yours is, or the same circumstances, but i was getting a cam chain noise on decel when warm, and also it was making some noise on Idle.
I thought maybe it was the cam chain tensioner or possibly a guide, took it to a good friend of mine that's one of those master of all bike mechanics (seriously) and he knows the K motor real well, He listened to it, and first thing he asked me was how long has it been since you had the throttle body's synched? told him not since i bought the bike which had been about 15,000 miles, and the bike had 46 on it. He said he doubts the tensioner or guide.
He synched the throttle body's, checked the compression, and timing, and now the motor purrs hot or cold, no more rattle, and I don't even need the choke to start the motor now it runs so smooth...
Not sure if that helps. and good luck _________________ 1993 K1100LT

those seals always look a little wet that "seepage" is what keeps them lubricated.
big drops of fluid are an indication that they are leaking.
the severity of the leak is what you need to concern your self with , if you are leaving stains in the drive way , parking lot etc. or having to add transmission fluid more than twice a year you should replace the seal asap.
P.S. this seal is cheap and easy to replace. |
