Plastic bits in engine oil

I've just taken my '93 K1100RS (mileage 54,000 miles) to the dealers for new tyres and an oil change, and they found some pieces of plastic in the oil Shocked The pieces are very tough, about 1/4 inch across, and irregular in shape, although one of them has a straight edge.

Anyone have any idea what they might be? Cam chain tensioner? The bike is running perfectly, with no unusual noises, and has just done a 500 mile trip with no problems.

Hi, Chas,
My guess would be, same as yours, cam chain tensioner. Were it mine, I would pull the front cover off and take a look. I can't think of any other plastic bits which would look like those pictured. Best of luck!

GM used timing gears with a plastic/nylon coating on them to keep them quiet. I believe the plastic bits found in your oil pan arebits of timing gear. Time new timing chain and gears!

GM? Or BM? And what gears? The cams are chain-driven, not gear-driven. Or do you mean the sprockets? Could be...

I had the dealers take a look at it, but they didn't have a timing cover gasket, so all they could say for sure was it wasn't the smaller of the two chain guides (accessible via the cam cover). The plastic bits don't appear to be the right colour to be from the other guide, but they could have been discoloured by the oil I suppose

I now have a new front chain guide and the gasket, so I'll get them to take another look at a later date. I'm working away from home, and will only do one or two short trips this winter, so it can wait. After all, it's just done the trip from Finland to the UK without any problems... (famous last words?)
