My "new" lower mileage K1100LT has developed an odd starting problem.
Turn ignition key on and I don't always get the short fuel pump prime run. At same time I noticed that the water temp warning indicator is not lit like the rest of instrument warnings for the power on test.
Starter turns engine over but no start. Then the coolant temp light comes on and bike starts.
Other times, all check lights are lit and bike starts first time. I know the coolant temp warning is driven by ECU, and have tried a spare ECU but same problem.
So if coolant temp indicator lights for the power-up test then no problem, but if not then no start. I've wiggled all the tank/ecu/test plug wiring but no effect...
This problem has started since its got colder here in the UK over the past few weeks. Since June no issues.
Once bike is warm, no problems at all and problem is not there.
I've shorted the sidestand switch so that can be eliminated.
Any ideas?

Not sure how it might be related to the water temp light (or not), but I finally traced a fuel pump intermitently not working to a bad connection in the fuel gauge sender unit that comes out of the bottom of the fuel tank.
The ground connection in the white plasitc plug (non messwithable) just had a random bad connection somewhere inside and replacing the whole unit with a newer used one cured the issue.
Also check the connector to the fuel gauge sender unit (the plug under the right hand side panel), the one that you have to disconnect to remove the fuel tank, it is often the cause of the bad connection.
Mine however was actually in the molded white plug directly under the tank. As it was a sealed unit, there was no way to repair, just had to replace the whole unit. All fixed for now...
A rather lengthy thread of my issues with this devil...

I would suggest that you check the coolant temp. sensor circuit.

Yeah...I have all the motronic pin-out and various wiring diagrams from last year when I was fixing a high fuel consumption prob.
Today, riding down from Newcastle to London the temp light just started flashing. It flashed 9 times with a pause in between. I stopped for a 30 minute break and then when I restarted the bike it didn't flash any more.
So definately something odd with that circuit... |
