When I bought my K1100 I soon noticed that neither plug had 12v to it. I subsequently pulled the multiplug from the back of both and sprayed them before wriggling the connections well on reassembly.
Still no power, but at this stage I thought the ignition had to be on before there would be power. Thanks to the K11OG archives I now know 12v should be there all the time.
Yesterday I noticed # 4 fuse was blown and saw that this is the power plug fuse. I replaced it and it blew straight away or within a few seconds. Also perhaps there was a hot smell momentarily. (not sure about this)
I thought I would try one more fuse (15a) and it did not blow. I now have 12v at both points.
I am a littled worried about this and before I came in from the shed I pulled #4 fuse to be safe and so I can sleep better.
To be on the safe side where should I check next? The wiring is in very good condition and has not been tampered with except when the police equipment was removed/replaced. Perhaps I am worrying about nothing?

I'd keep looking for bare, skinned wires. Especially if it was a police bike and has have "stuff" removed.
Fuses don't blow for just no reason. Somewhere there was a current flow sufficient to blow the fuse.

It's possible that the "smell" you thought you smelled could have been the fault burning free, only to fault again sometime when it's not convienent for you.....

Check the back of & inside the sockets for verdigris.
that's what caused fuse blowing on my K100 years ago.
