I have a 1996 K 1100 LT, with 72,000 km on the clock.
A while ago I was plagued by the engine cutting out occasionally at += 140 km/h.
I took it in to the BMW agents who advised me that the "Idle Regulating valve" was packing up, and the engine was "Overfueling"
Repair cost 400 dollars.
About a month later, the exact same thing happened again. This time I was told a "Temperature Sensor" had packed up, and the overheating signal was cutting the engine out. Repair cost 400 dollars.
Two months later, exactly the same thing happened again.
A while later a friend was visiting, and asked how the bike was running.
I went to start it to show him it was ok, but even though the ignition lights came on, the starter was dead. My friend mentioned that he had not heard the fuel pump, which makes a noise when the ignition is switched on.
on inspection, we found the connection (wires to fuel pump and fuel gauge) to be faulty. I removed the coupling, and for a year and a half, I have had no more cutting out.
It appears the faulty connection was cutting out the fuel pump. |

Not uncommon at all for that connector to fail.
BMW's design for the most part is pretty bullet proof. There are some week points, but not too many. _________________ Ride safe.

Never heard of a "Idle Regulating valve": do you have the part#? _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.

Over the years I have had three different causes of intermittent engine cutout:
1. Sidestand switch
2. Fuel pump connector
3. Motronic connector under seat
Having sorted these issues I have not had any further problems for over five years now. _________________ 1980 CB900FA

I'm having trouble with the sidestand switch. I lost power a couple of times this morning and could keep running by lowering my left heel onto the sidestand and holding it down a bit. It's a little hard to shift that way, as I lose power as soon as I move my foot to shift.
I'm going to climb under tomorrow to see if anything needs tightening up, but after searching and reading some of these posts, can anyone direct me to the procedure for bypassing the sidestand switch? Mahalo! _________________ 1996 K1100RS |

The switch is a normally open switch that is held closed when the side stand is up.
It sounds like the switch is opening and closing to work the circuit, so it's possible that there is something mechanical with the lever and actuator arm that is messed up.
In direct answer to your question, to bypass the switch you can cut the wires going to it and connect them together.
If you are looking for the "official" bmw part to bypass the side stand:
61121459998 it's called a "contact ring" about $20.

You can also pull the connector which is on the R/H side of the battery and coil some wire around the two pins to short it. That way its easy to reverse should you wish to. _________________ 1980 CB900FA

This was the culprit. There was some play in the sidestand. I tightened the bolt and no problems on this morning's commute. Thanks again.
(I haven't yet bypassed the switch, but may still do that to allow the bike to warm up on the sidestand.) _________________ 1996 K1100RS |

The bike does not need to warm up. Start it and ride - gently at first. _________________ Jim
