Evening all,
I'm new to the forum, and new to K11 ownership, having been given a K1100LT for free by my neighbour, whose guilt at the neglect he has shown this particular bike for the past 11 years finally led him to donate it to someone who "will look after it".
Well it needs a fair amount of mostly cosmetic work, the paint is fine but the alloy on the engine block and shaft drive are furred up quite badly. Also need to clean out the fuel system as it wont start and the sparks are fine.
No doubt I will be along for help and advice from all you generous people as the project progresses, so thanks in advance! _________________ 1993 K1100LT - Finally found a good home at last! |

WELCOME.
Good group here. Great information too.
Good luck with your LT.
Are you able to post any pictures of your bike here?

Well, here goes with the photos... as I say, cosmetically challenged, but basically sound. Needs tyres, fork sliders, screen motors need attention, lots of elbow grease, etc etc. Does it look hopeless?

Wow! Hopeless? No, but you're going to have your work cut out for you. It looks like it was ridden on snowy roads with salt and then put away wet!
Aside form the cosmetic issues, I'll bet you're going to have some electrical gremlins to deal with for sure. All of the main connectors are going to need a thorough cleaning and lubing, the culprit of most K issues that I had.
I'm sure the fuel system is going to need to some serious TLC. A full tank removal and internal cleaning, injectors might need to be cleaned professionally, fuel pump might be shot.
All of the drive line fluids will need to be drained and replaced. Spline lube might in order.
The good news is you've found the right place to help you get it sorted out.
If the collective wisdom on this site can't get it running again, no one will.
Good luck and don't hesitate to ask lots of questions, I think everyone here enjoys seeing a neglected K getting back on the road!
Cheers and good on you for taking on the task, it will be worth it if you stick to it. _________________ Steve

If nothing else, you got it for the right price!
Congratulations.
You're going to need a good penetrating oil and perhaps a torch to heat up those rusted bolts.
An aluminum wire brush will do wonders for removing that corrosion (test in an inconspicuous place to be sure)

Hi, the true mileage is around 60,000 but the clocks only show 19000 as they were replaced not long before it was put away. Yes, I reckon it must have had wet road salt on it as well as being dirty. First job is to get it running, then assess the costs involved in getting it roadworthy and presentable. It wont be a quick turnaround unfortunately, as I've got a full time job and a house and family! _________________ 1993 K1100LT - Finally found a good home at last! |

WELCOME!!!!
Poor poor LT, nobody loved you.
I trust you are a paitient man? You have a lot of time to kill?
On the penetrating oil, of which it looks like you will need plenty.
Make your own. 50% ATF fluid / 50% Acetone. Beats anything you can buy.
And no, I am not a chemist, but I know it works.
Keep us updated, we are a curious bunch. _________________ 1993 K1100RS that I'd rather be riding FAST!

Wow!
What do they put on Scottish roads? Battery acid?
The only parts not corroded seem to be made of rubber.
if you are after a cosmetic restoration, it may need bead/sandblasting.
You have a massive project in front of you.

To save some money, hit it with a soda blaster, either use a cheapo sand blasting kit but get soda from the pool shop (do you have pool shops in Scotland?), hoses off easily. I'd hit the whole thing from what I can see!
It'll clean up, new shocks, maybe new fork tubes, fuck nose what condition the electricals are in.....gunna be a lot of work, but rewarding if you get there _________________ K1100RS '97

Hello all.. and WELCOME to our latest Scottish member !!
I'll ditto "jp's" recommendation on the 50/50 ATF/Acetone as a rust busting penetrating solution.. I've used it with all my Airheads ( old air cooled BMWs ) and on cars and "K"s as well... for a very long time. ie: it really works!
Wouldnt it be GREAT at a Meet sometime to do a "community K restoration" ? Man o Man would this bike be a candidate !
Wishing our new member all the best and urging him to document fully the revival of this machine no matter how long it takes..
All the best.... // Ernie in NH (sometimes ) _________________ AMA,, American Deaf Bikers

Hi FrasMac,
Positive lot these Colonials aren't they ?
I think you have the makings there of a wonderful project . . . are you intending to do a ground up restoration ? Or just footer wi' bits ?
Everyone on here are really helpful with the expertise and knowlege, so don't be "feart" to ask "glaekit" questions.
Welcome . . . I might even spot you trundling about Blighty some day . . if you're unfortunate. _________________ Nick

You guys are amazing. Even folk in England using the correct spelling of Scots slang!
The plan initially was to just get the bike started, then do a basic cosmetic resto job. The paint is ok under the grime, so that part would be easy enough. I can get exchange re-chromed fork legs for a couple of hundred pounds, It will need tyres, so another couple hundred, already bought a battery, so the only fault light on the dash is an ABS warning, but the front brake seals have blown so probably once thats fixed it will be ok, everything else works except the screen, which is sticking. Getting the fur off of the alloy is going to be the biggest pain in the ass, elbow grease is the order of the day! It will need a mirror for the left side.
But first, to clean out the fuel system, hopefully then it will start. I'm getting good sprks, but no "priming" sound from the fuel pump/injectors when turning on the ignition. Hopefully should get on to that fairly soon, once the unusual family busy-ness has passed! I'll keep you posted! _________________ 1993 K1100LT - Finally found a good home at last! |

Two usual reasons for "no prime" are :-
Corrosion on the 4 way tank connector.
Siezed pump.
Both possible on a long term stored machine.
Get familiar with your Ohms / Volts test meter. How are you with electrics? We can help with that too.
Found this in the stickies.

Well, here is the latest on the neglected bike.
I sold it. But, I sold it to an old friend, a retired gentleman called Dick. He said to me "I could spend 4 hours a day on it". I would be lucky to spend 4 hours a month, the way things are just now. So, today, I get a call from Dick, "come and see me, I've got it running". So I went to his nice big garage, where the bike is stripped of the entire front end, but is burbling away merrily on tickover. Sounded good! A wee bit hesitant on pickup, but there is still a long way to go. He replaced the fuel pump, and it started after 5 presses of the button. He has also done some cleaning up and started to rub down the fur on the alloy. It turns out that there is no etching of the alloy, so the clean up should be a wee bit easier. New second hand forks from ebay are ready to be fitted. I'll keep you posted! _________________ 1993 K1100LT - Finally found a good home at last! |

well, Dick spent ages, repairing, cleaning, polishing. The bike was MOT'd today!
Brought a wee tear to my eye, it did. Looking amazing, not concours, but it looks like a 20 year old bike which has been looked after, not neglected, as it was. _________________ 1993 K1100LT - Finally found a good home at last! |
