|

Had left side tire wear and got curious about alignment. It was very pronounced on the rear left side. I have installed a RS/R rear rim (4.5" wide). It is very close to swing arm on right side, and has much larger clearance on left. Bike is a LT.
Did the string alignment method and measured 2.5" from right rear rim/tire edge extended, to front wheel. Left rear rim extended measures 0" --its even/flush with front left wheel.
So about 63.5mm difference-- the rear wheel is 'out/offset'' to the right, 63.5mm-
left turns are easier than a right turns/corners...wondering if bike leans to cause front and rear left side wear.
is this normal offset? i know about road crown/left turn wear patterns etc. 2.5" seems large. _________________ 1997 K1100LT-SE

I have seen the alignment measurements somewhere on the web. Yes the rear wheel is offset from the front so it will not be exactly in a straight line.
I don't remember what the measurement is. _________________ Ride safe.

If I am in the right place of the repair manual, page 46.17 explains how to measure "track offset". Permissable amount says 12mm. Diagram shows rear wheel centerline to be right of the front wheel centerline. Which strikes me as odd since it would seem they could have a thicker shim to move it more to the center (assuming the front wheel is on "actual" center). _________________ 93 K1100RS (2up)

Found out that the bike has a bent frame...will have to ponder a fix or ignore and buy tires often... _________________ 1997 K1100LT-SE

I'm running 22mm offset with 5" K1200S rear wheel .. absolutely NO problems.
Ben Kingham is using the same set up for his B.E.A.R.S. series race bike - won the series outright last year...................
