| My fuel tank is not leaking, but since I think this bike is a keeper for me, I'm trying to make everything right. At some point, the tank was lined, now it's peeling. Since I don't know why it was lined, I think I'll just let it be and carry an extra fuel filter. Do you think someone would line the tank as a preventive measure? |

Chances are it was lined to help seal some leaks.
With these tanks being aluminum they won't rust, but they will corrode from exposure to moisture.
Common places for these tanks to collect moisture and corrode is along the left and right side lower edge seams.
Make sure your pump pickup screen is in tact to block the larger pieces from getting in the pump impeller.

Call Eppa (Cycle Doc) (804) 769-2324. He relined the tank for Steve. Eppa is east of Ashland - about an hour and a half from you. Or, you could check with Anton - I'm pretty sure he relines tanks also.
Maybe the product used at the time does not stand up to this newfangled reformulated gas we get these days. At any rate, hopefully Eppa or Anton can give you some guidance. Maybe there is a new liner out that won't break down with this new gas. _________________ Jim

Hi,
Because of that, I'm not inclined to line any more of them. It's hard to
obtain adhesion with aluminum. I used POR 15, but I don't think it's the fault
of the product, but of the preparation. Aluminum is tricky; can't use acid to
clean/etch like w/steel, and the instant it's clean, it starts to form protective
aluminum oxide that can "push" the lining off.
The POR 15 lining can be removed with MEK. I apologize for your trouble..
There are other products; Eastwood has one, but I have no idea if it, or any other
will do better. The last couple of aluminum tanks, I've just cleaned the inside and fixed the
leaks from outside...

May be time to watch E-Bay for another tank - that could be a crap shoot too however.
I would check out some "marine" boating type of repairs.
Aviation guys use some good stuff too

Find someone skilled in aluminum radiator repair, and have it welded. Normaly the pinholes are on the under or non visible side anyway. _________________ John Merrick

Hey Kervin, I noticed that also the last time I had the fuel cap off.
The leak was a very minor one in the lower left hand side, down at the lower point, if you look close, you'll see where I touched up a bit paint. Not even a leak as much as a weep. It's a common point where water in the fuel settles and corrosion, not rust, occurs. The only suggestion was to have the tank lined, which I did, yada. yada, so forth.
I would just pull out as much of that lining as is easily removed by hand and try to not disturb the area down on the lower left. Chances are the seepage won't re-occur and the other lining that really isn't needed can be removed.
I thought it could be fixed with a dab of JB Welds or similar, but was advised against it.

Take the fuel cap surround off so you can get your hand in, reach in with a cigarette lighter, light it up and where you see flames spurting out through the paint that's where your leak is. Have the ambulance bloke strap your arm back on and weld the hole closed.
