|
|
Hello!
I'm changing fork oil. Fork is disassembled, I have each leg now dripping oil over night in something about 30* position. Forks are from 1995 K1100RS - Marzocchi made.
Thing that make me wander is: where that 50ccm of oil stuck in the left leg? Is it at the bottom of fork pipe? It it is so, then putting it almost horizontal should fix the issue. I suspect, that due to mounting of ABS sensor the drain plug is higher then in the right leg? Or oil stuck somewhere in dumping cartridge?

All I do is wrap the brake disk below the fork drain plug in alfoil, shaping it into a funnel sort of into the catch tray or whatever, jump on the bike, take it off the centrestand, hold the front brake on and pump the forks with your body weight. Do this until nothing more comes out and you're done. Only takes a few pumps. _________________ K1100RS '97

No need for bike abuse As I wrote - legs are off the bike. I can push them by hand one at the time - so I will do. But what after that? Can I be sure that 400 ccm should be the right amount for the left leg?

Rafal, I think that if you have removed the bottom center bolt to remove the lower slider from the upper half, that will allow the extra oil out of the internal damper.
I didn't measure the oil that came out when I pulled the forks last time for seals.
I think that's the difference. when you just do a normal drain/fill you don't pull the axle or the lower center bolt that threads into the bottom of the internal damper. _________________ Ride safe.

Gidday,
Love the alfoil usage Drikko, will try that one next time.
Yep done a fork oil change on the weekend, undone the bottom screw, let it run out, gave it a few pumps on the handlebars, let it drip out some more and refilled with 360mm in each as the book said (my new flash clymers manual - woohoo!).. _________________ Cheers Grant

Grant,
According to my BMW K1100 manual the refill capacity is:
Oil Change (i.e. when releasing oil through he small drain screw:
Left leg 0.35 Litres
Right leg 0.4 litres
New filling both legs 0.4 Litres i.e if you have stripped them.

drikko don't get me wrong - it's just my screwed sense of humour.
The tip with air foil and pumping the forks is new to me and I'll use it next regular oil change.
| Code: |
-----
------
------- <- 30* from horizontal - the leg
\-----/ <- pan
|
So like that it is dripping whole night. Last time I had problems to move the bottom assembly bolt - yet I'll give a try to it.

Rafal, if you have everything drained out of the lower part of the fork, you could try and invert the fork and see if you get any more oil out of the fill hole. _________________ Ride safe.

If you already have the forks off the bike, I'd recommend you take the lower sliders off the tubes. With them off you can clean the bottom of the sliders. You will be amazed at the amount of crud that collects there, even if the fluid has been changed.
A bottle brush, rag-on-a-stick, and a can of some kinda spray cleaner (brake cleaner) has worked for me.
Always a good feeling knowing your new fluid is going into a clean fork. |
