|
|
Gidday Folks,
Yes calling out to all experienced electrical persons on the site for some welcomed knowledge to point me again in the right direction
Ok I have power to the speedo housing as my ABS lights, hazard and tacho works...
The rear sensor has power to it, tested with a low pulse tester?
The background lights in the housing are working...
All my fuses have been tested and are working well...
So I have removed the speedo housing itself from the bike this morning, hooked up the testing light to the negative terminal on the battery and gone hunting in the pin sockets with the test light on the speedo cluster wires and only 5 of all the pin sockets light up when tested?? I gather this is not good??? BTW I had the ignition on and headlight working when testing..
Looking at the bike from the front if it was all assembled again I had 2 working on the left side row and 3 working on the right side row
Should all of these be active when testing?? I'm no expert of this but I thought yes they should be..
What would my next step be to take...
many thanks once again

Gidday,
Thank for the info, i sat and read the links then went out to the shed and pulled the speedo housing apart, rubbed the pins, and cleaned the sockets again, put it back together and this time the speedo needle went around to max speed when i turned it on.
Another small step forward!! Will keep chipping away at it..

Gidday Folks,
many thanks for the info once again.
TBH I've gotten myself a little pissed off at the moment and this is not good for Easter Sunday with and over this bike, but it will not beat me.
Speedo showing power but needle still goes around the max speedo position and sits there until I turn off the key and this was after I have completely checked and retraced wires from front to back three times, cleaned and rubbed all of the connections that I can see, dismantled speedo housing threes times and cleaned the pins/sockets, checked and cleaned the rear drive sensor...
The speedo housing itself looks extremely clean and has 5th 1993 stamped on it so it is original.
Sort of running out of options now for my level of electrical knowledge and ability, but will keep ready.
Many thanks and cheers

The speedo needle going full scale with power applied is not a good sign. It's pointing to either a short to a power bus somewhere within the speedo or to a defective circuit card. I would use a magnifying glass and good light source to try and identify whether a short exists. If you removed and replaced numerous connectors in the cluster when you had it apart, it may be possible that a pin has broken on one of the flexible circuit strips. It's very difficult to diagnose a problem remotely over the internet, as you can appreciate.
If after a careful inspection, you come to the conclusion that no short exists, then possibly one of the speedo circuits is defective. I don't believe individual circuit cards are available from BMW. You could opt to purchase a used instrument cluster to replace the defective one.
There are many Australian members on the K100-forum. It would behove you to connect with them through that forum, to build relationships and support structure. Many K100 parts are shared with the K1100 and consequently you might find a used instrument cluster for a K1004V or late K1002V that will work in your bike.
Best of luck. _________________ - Robert

Gidday Folks
Hmmmm that's something I really didn't want to hear.
I had the speedo apart once before the issue with the needle sitting around on max speed when powered up raised its ugly head.
This is now gone off and the needle sits back to 0 all the time..
many thanks for your replies and Cheers _________________ Cheers Grant

Gidday Folks,
So now I have a manual on its way, YIPPEE but until then I am flying by the seat of my pants a little.
Can someone please tell me what "signal" I should be getting at the rear speedo sensor as I rang a speedo repair shop in Melbourne and they ask "what sort of signal was it" when I told them that a auto electrician had tested it and said there was power there??
so far I have:
Removed speedo housing, cleaned and checked all the contact pins as suggested in the other postings on the site.
Cleaned and have power to rear sensor.
Connection under the right side cover has been cleaned.
I have power to everything the speedo housing except the trip meter and speed indicator....
Any info at this stage would be very helpful.

Grant,
The 12V power at that rear sensor becomes a 12v pulse. It's basically a hall-effect sensor, if that means anything to you. The sensor basically reads a notched ring inside the final drive and creates the pulse signal. The speedo translates that square-wave pulse into the speed indicator needle motion.
Lame explanation, I know, but I suck at explaining stuff like this. _________________ '02 - GL1800

Gidday,
Today the courier called by my signshop with a box in hand, Woohoo! I love a self brought gift, so straight home I went which is only about 2kms from my factory, I dived into the resto shed and then with a boxcutter in one hand I quickly made a mess of the cardboard box and in the other I was holding one brand new complete 1993 BMW speedo housing.
I brought it as NOS from a German seller off German ebay, ya gotta love google translator, all up including postage it was $270.00, and I have been told that they are $1200.00 here in Oz.
After reading info, trolling and asking questions on bmw forums, checking, cleaning wires and sorting out various issues of what might be wrong with my old speedo over a few weeks, I was quoted $120.00 just to have my old speedo land on the counter of a speedo repairer in Melbourne not including courier costs there and back and also no guarantee that they could fix it, so I bit the bullet and got a new one hoping the problem would be solved.
So I plug the new one into the bike, tighten the small backing screw up, reach for the key and hit the "GO" buttons?
YES! everything works and I NOW HAVE A WORKING SPEEDO!
Speedo problem solved, now to continue on the ABS.
Many thanks for any info and advice forwarded over the last few weeks.
Much appreciated. _________________ Cheers Grant
