Pulled the exhaust today and found a crack. Anyone had any long term success with having it welded. If so, what type/kind? I'm clueless about welding. For those that have replaced it, what did you replace it with and what should I be looking at price wise? It's a '95 LT. so what year bikes are compatible? Also, any tips on removing the O2 sensor? Before you say anything, the bolts were properly torqued. Thanks

I've got one just like that but with 2 cracked header tube welds, setting in the garage attic.
I wasn't going to waste my time/money on a repair that would eventually break again.
I replaced it with a Remus system. _________________ Ride safe.

Remus is one option.
Just welding will not do it, it will crack again, so another is to reinforce it like on this picture:

welding off bike will cause header tube to bend out of alignment, seek a pro, its a difficult weld. Re-install will be difficult if pipes are not in line, I had to heat and bend a tube back to original location, and its still was very difficult to put back on bike.
Best luck, the darn things are pricey (remus) ideally, welding on bike works ok, but will crack again...unless additional re-inforce metal is added.
02 sensor...penetrant oil overnite, brace, whack with hammer(the wrench), or long lever extension (iron pipe)...heat with torch has worked for me too... _________________ 1997 K1100LT-SE

I'm a fan of K bikes and all but this really is an awfully designed exhaust system. Not only because of these cracks that commonly occur but what a PITA it is to remove/install to do maintenance.
The Renus is spendy but at least it's still available - which is saying a something as most aftermarket stuff for the 4Vs is no longer around.

Hello,
One of mine did that.... In the UK at the moment there is an eBay seller I presume disposing of old stock of full 2 piece Remus systems for around the £400 mark which is quite a bit of the retail price for what is a superb system. I came by one by other means but maybe he will ship (costly I expect) if you are thinking of replacing. I know it is quite a bit of cash but might be the best option in the long run -There is a fitting hole for the sensor
I did sell an old BMW system for around the £100 mark which was in fine order but they don't seem to come up that often.
Not sure if that helps?
Best regards,
David |

Question for those with a Remus. How's the fit? Any problems with the install? Seems I've heard there's a problem with removing rear tire/tyre with Remus on an LT. _________________ 1995 K1100 LT

I have a Remus on my RS. Bolts right up. I need to remove the back half to get the rear wheel off but it's just two bolts - the exhaust hanger and the hose clamp around the collector. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

+1 same on the LT. Just have to remove the "can". _________________ Ride safe.

I have RS rim on my LT. I find removing half the remus easier to change the rear wheel cause it provides more room to get the tire out of there. I was lucky to find a used one. They do come up used if you are patient, just be ready to jump if you get the chance. I had my stock welded twice by a very good welder, once on the bike. Then I bought a used one from Beemer boneyard with 120,000 miles on it (but no header cracks) I am keeping the used stock beemer boneyard in case I sell the remus separate when I sell the LT. It may be another decade before I sell. _________________ 93 K1100LT

I have had mine welded. Find someone who is used to stainless welding.
I sent it in fitted to a "jig".
The jig being a wooden plank into which, 4 pipe (header) size holes had been bored. The pipes were then woodscrewed in place. I was given the plank, by a bloke (guy) who had swapped his K11 for an R saying " you'll need this eventually, how right he was.
The best way to stop the cracking, is to replace the silencer (muffler) doughnut (do-nut) regularly.

| Don't bother repairing. Go with a Remus. Use the old one for boat anchor |

SuperChicken- I've not repaired the crack. I've been rather busy with other stuff and have been hoping a used Remus would come up for sale or I'd win $1200 bucks in Lotto. _________________ 1995 K1100 LT

Had the crack welded on my '97 by Jap & German (two Welsh guys who are ex BMW trained) who are under the railway arches in Druid Street on the south side of the River Thames near Tower Bridge for any of you living near London. It was done about 8 years ago (authorised BMW dealer wouldn't consider a repair job as it was impossible) and have never had a problem with it since. The bike still goes like the clappers _________________ Matthew

A couple of questions for those of you with the Remus. What is the difference in the aluminum vs titanium finish. Their website doesn't offer any deals that I can find other than titanium is more expensive. Second, does anyone have any experience withe the Grand Prix canister, I.E. noise level ? The site says it's designed for sport bikes so am assuming louder. Remus currently out of stock of full setup with innovation canister and they're offering this in its place at a yet undisclosed price. _________________ 1995 K1100 LT

I've got a full remus with the Alu sport can on it. I haven't seen a Titanium one to know the differences. I would imagine that it would be just cosmetic. Aluminum should be just a light weight as Titanium, or real close. _________________ Ride safe.

It depends upon the alloy (and thickness) but in general aluminum weighs less than titanium. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
