Hi guys/girls: it only took three days for the problem to develop. Now, when I use the front break and release the lever, the break stays stuck/keeps breaking for some time. If I break mildly hard at a stop sign while not moving, then release the lever, I cannot even get going! Have you had this symptoms before? Any ideas? The ABS is not working, but the modulator is still on line, could it be the modulator? Master needs work/rebuilt? It does the same thing whether the abs brain is or is not plugged. Any help you can offer is appreciated

Probably the caliper.

Most likely the caliper(s)...need to get new seals and rebuild them, the kit has pistons as well i think. They are teflon coated, don't scratch if cleaning them.

Good ol sticky calipers are a pain to fix, there are threads that tell how to do it, you'll need compressed air to get the pistons out.

It could be both--the master cylinder--fixing is same principle, new rubber seals...'brake'...'braking'...

Raise the front wheel, and spin...apply brake, and observe the calipers. If the piston(s) don't move back ie. 'release', carefully 'pry' it with a screwdiver to attempt to get it to move....that will tell u if its sticking, etc.

Could be the Master cylinder.

When it locks up try cracking open a bleed nipple on the caliper and see if it frees off the brakes. If it does I would suspect that rather than the caliper seals.

If the master cylinder piston is not returning fully then the return path for the fluid will not be opened, hence the brakes stick on.

Thanks for the replies!!!! I'll try Mike's suggestion over the weekend and see if we can narrow down between caliper vs master. I'll report back, let you know. Thanks again!

Something else to consider,,,, how old are the rubber brake hoses.

If they are still original, it's possible one of them could be de-laminating internally and acting like a "check-valve".

I have heard of this happening with old hoses.

Scott's suggestion was my next thought.

I had a friend with an R1100R, who was bleeding his brakes a few weeks before a tour, and noticed one of the front hoses bulging every time the brake was applied. When he stripped the pipes off, he found small particles in suspension in the fluid!

New stainless steel braided hoses were fitted pronto.

thanks again to everyone!!!! So I did the test Mike suggested and I was in luck.., the calipers were fine (no leaks, so in retrospect it was expected???). I rebuilt the master, got air out of the line and try the break......, the break hose broke (from reservoir to connector) and started to leak fluid. So Scott was right!! I am thinking that blockage was probably the problem all along, the old master was just not strong enough to burst the break hose open!! Today I'll install a new break hose and that should be it!! Thanks again.... BTW if it is not it, I'll report back to the group.

All the hoses (unless someone has been replacing them one by one) are 20 years old. Go to Spiegler.com and get a kit - replace all of them.

+2 Well made lines, easy to clock the banjos to get everything to align properly. I think I paid a bit over $200 for the silver (cheapest) color.
