Gidday Folks,

Yes after 8 months and many questions on here which I am ever so grateful for the answers and help from you all, well it didn't really take me all that time and yes I dragging my feet a little as I have to play with my ole 28 Chevy also along the way, but through the past week I finally got my bike a "RWC" Road Worthy Certificate and then legally road registered it..

So yesterday (Saturday) I went for my first decent little run up with a mate on his old BMW and all reports are thumbs up.

Wow to easy! Is what came to mind when I rolled to a stop in the driveway at 12.30pm after a quick 360km ride to east Gippsland and back on my old beemer.
At 20yrs old and only travelled 153,000kms which for these bikes is nothing the 1993 BMW K1100LT can certainly chew up the miles quickly with next to no discomfort on the rider as this was my first decent few hours on it since buying it back in March and fixing up some previous owners mistakes over winter.
At 100kph the 4 cylinder 1100cc motor is doing 4000rpm and is just wanting to open the gate and bolt, up around 5rpm and beyond the engine is so smooth and responsive then add the fairing combined with the adjustable electric screen and you can fully appreciate why these bikes where built for high speed autobahn commuting, it just does it with ease and I can now see why this model BMW has won so many long distance, endurance "Iron Butt Rallies" over in the USA with races like 11,000 miles in 11 days.. (1000 mile = 1600 kms)
I rode to the start of the Great Alpine Way with a mate Steve on his 81 BMW R100 RS who was then riding thru to the Mount Thedbo area for a gathering tonight and return trip Sunday via the Hume Weir, Mansfield and Melbourne.

One question if I may is fuel and the gauge:

I rode 240km then filled up because the gauge was waving about heaps while showing just below 1/2 full and being my first non around the block/close to home ride I just wanted to check the amount left.

I filled it up with 13 litres? which gives me 50mpg I think.

What range is normal and I use normal loosely here, and at what range does the reserve light come on?

BTW I rode at 110 - 115 kph.

Throw any info at me if you may...

Grant,

Congratulations on having the brick back on the road. GREAT!

As far as the fuel gauge- it seems like each K100/K1100 has its own character.

Recently I was on a very long day ride with a friend who was riding his R1200GS. Knowing that my gauge was very pessimistic, I stretched my second refuel stop until the gauge read at the very bottom of the scale, pointing at "E" (and the red low fuel light had been on for about 50km).

On our petrol stop, I refilled with 17L.

BMW states that our tanks hold 22L so I had quite a bit of fuel left.

As far as the fuel mileage- yours is good and within the better range of what others have noted.

John

Gidday Folks,

John thanks for your input on the matter.

Next time I am going to strap on a spare 10 litres of fuel in a container and then run the bike tank empty just to see as I like to be pretty sure about distance and fuel.

Talk to you soon.

How many months did it take you to track down a Yeti and slay it for that seat cover?

For some reason, most 93 LTs have that stupid undamped fuel gauge. Mine did when I bought it.

Good job on getting the old girl back on the road.

Gidday Folks,

Actually have had the Yeti for 25yrs, surprisingly stumbled across it at the local market as a young 21 year old FJ1100 rider and thought, "that will do it" and it has served my rear end well for many many years of motorcycle riding..

Hey Grant,

You might want to reconsider running the tank dry- or even very low.
The pumps use fuel to cool themselves. No/low fuel might make for an unhappy pump.
Maybe if you're caught on the road, but I wouldn't do it just for curiosity's sake.

Gidday Folks,

Don, thanks for the heads up mate, I actually thought about the pump and a low fuel supply but thought they are most likely made to run when low to empty, obviously not to be.

Anyway I suppose the 300km mark is a good time to step off, stretch the legs and top up again..

Many thanks for your input Smile

Agreed. I usually refill right after the idiot light comes on mostly because it bugs me but the fuel pump does generate some heat so keeping it submerged can't hurt.

Hi Grant,
I had the same "problem" ,as you describe it, on my K1100RS/96. Suddenly the fuel gauge started going up/down very quickly especially when half reservoir empty.
I changed the gauge with an other from ebay.de (used) and now it’s ok, damped as before. You can check it ,turning off the ignition or with opening the side stand, must go slowly to 0 otherwise is wrong. You can live with it or replace it. According OEM no new gauge is available any more, so you have to find a used one.

Indeed correct Drikko, yes the Yeti is a little elusive, shy and quite hard to find around these greener parts of OZ, not sure about up your way now days?, but the ole faithful sheep is plenty bountiful and relatively easy to poach from an unsuspecting neighbour.

Happy Hunting!

Gday Grant
A good job there getting the old girl purring again. I'm sure you'll get many happy miles on her. Ditto on the fuel use, about 200 klicks between refills for me to keep the pump submerged. I consistently get 5.5 litres to the 100 on the highway and doesn't seen to change as long as I stay under 130. Bloody hard in Queensland now with a broke government putting a radar behind every tree.
