I really need to see a K1100LT laid over on it's crash bars.

I need pictures from as many angles as you can get.

The reason being is I believe I can modify the existing design (K1100LT bars) without too much drama and cost to do what I need.

I am mostly concerned about how that design protects the upper fairing and mirror and the clearances to the ground.

Any pictures will help!

Thank you so much!

Having dropped mine once, I can tell you that they do NOTHING to protect the upper fairing or mirrors because the center of gravity is too high. The bike rolls on the bar until the mirror either stops it or disintegrates. If you're lucky enough to slow the fall, the mirror gets scuffed at a minimum.
Saddlebags, obviously, take a beating too...
When I get home tonight, I'll get you some pics.

Bill

Thank you for the reply Bill.

I suspected that might be a possibility for the very reason you stated.

Thank you and I look forward to anything you can offer.

+1 What Bill said. BTDT.
All the bars will do is allow the bike to "roll" around the engine, and then land on the mirrors........I've got a cracked upper fairing from that very situation.
Also the mountings will not help much(if any) with an "at speed" impact.

Well I guess that settles that.
I now know I have to include upper fairing protection.

Thanks, I won't need pics.

GOOD LUCK! I have no doubt that you'll figure it out somehow.

The only two solutions I could come up with are:
1. Don't drop that pig.
2. Mount a sidecar to ensure #1
Cool

I'm not ready for #2 yet. It's just too much fun to ride on the twisties.

Noticed you were thinking of home made engine bars.
I will try to post details of what I made and they work

Sorry the first one did not work.
The 2nd one on photobucket works ok!
It just means you have all the pictures that show my sketch of the bars and misc photos of the bike during renovation.
Hope this is of use .
Richard

Thank you very much Richard!

The rear set is PERFECT!

Quick question, do your front bar protect the upper fairing?

You are quick to reply.
To me the front bars work. (You can alter how far you want the top of the bars to stick out when making them)
If you look at the photos you will see a scuff mark at the bottom of the fairing. R/H side.
This happened after I had fitted only the top bars ,went for a run ,stopped and had to lay the bike down. Result no damage to mirror or fairing only scratched marks at bottom. So I fitted the bottom bars as the sketch shows to give this area protection.
The reason I laid the bike down was due to short legs (32") on tip toes ,JUST!!!
No problem now as I have dropped the rear suspension by 25mm and lowered the front by 10mm to allow for the rear alteration.
Feel free to ask any questions.
Richard

Hey Richard, I just came in from the garage and need to cook supper.

X marks the spot.

Those are the mounting points for the crash bars. Not shown (marked) is the second point of contact on the rear of the oil sump that the OEM K1100LT bracket uses.

My friend Brian Diver suggested this.

I think it should still be incorporated into the lower guards.

Gwen, why don't you just buy a Jap RR that has frame sliders already.

Or maybe some of these:

To what will the crash bar attach?

There are no structural frame members at that area of the fairing. You'll have to reason out how the impact forces are going to act and where they will get directed away from the impact zone and dissipated through the structure so that they don't cause damage. The only material at that point is composite plastic material and the fairing mounting spider. The problem is much like how static and dynamic loads work on building structures and how those loads get directed through the framework to ground.

Let's say the end of that crash protection is anchored to the inside of the fairing using a plate structure. When the crash bar contacts the ground (or whatever), the force is directed through the bar to the plate and then through the mounting bolts into the composite plastic (for example). The force is probably still of a magnitude that it will crack the plastic composite. It would be best to anchor the crash bar to the headstock so that the force gets directed into the frame and converts to heat and movement of the frame.

Just throwing it out there for consideration.
