While replacing a damaged fuel cap on my 1996 K1100RS, I noticed a few bad things going on in the fuel tank.
1. The fuel pump is loose, and rattles around it it's housing.
2. All the fasteners are rusty.
3. The hose between the fuel pump and the fuel filter is crumbling.
4. There are brown particles in the lower corners of the fuel tank, likely bits of hose rubber an rust from the fasteners.
5. The fuel level sender has a float that looks too small to do much. The whole thing may be bent. It does work, but I don't know how accurate it is.
6. The low level light does not test when turning on the key. Should it?

I'll certainly need to replace the fuel pump and fuel filter, as well as the fuel lines. I've been told that there is an available automotive replacement that works. How about the fuel filter? Where do I get these items?

Thank you for any assistance!

John,

Is the fuel pump not working? If it is working, the donut that it fit in is available separately from BMW dealers (#4 in the picture- that is from the MaxBMW website). Cheaper than replacing with an aftermarket pump.

The fuel gauge is fairly inaccurate on these bikes- Having ridden bikes since the 70's, I always rely on the trip odometer for fuel level.

When you replace the fuel lines, be sure to use hose that is good for fuel injection.

A decent generic fuel filter is a NAPA gold 3032 for less than $5.
Metal housing and rated for FI pressures.

I have a 1994 K1100RS which has always started immediately no matter how long it sat. After a long winter, I tried to start it yesterday and it would not start. Cranked fine and tried to kick over on several occasions but nothing. Gas smelled bad so I drained and replaced. The fuel pump kicks on as designed but no gas is coming out of the line going to the fuel rail. Is it possible that the fuel could have clogged the $400 fuel pump? Can it be salvaged?

If some crud has jammed it then sometimes reversing the polarity so it spins the other way and kicks out what's jamming it will help.

Never hurts to spend $4 on a new 3032 fuel filter from NAPA.

Sorry forgot to mention that I already replaced the $35.00 BMW fuel filter. Good to know about the 3032.
Thanks

Try pulling the plugs to see what they look like.

Thanks but regardless shouldn't I have gas flowing out of the tube coming out of the gas tank going to the fuel rail when cranking the bike if the fuel pump is working?
Question

BTW This bike has been bulletproof for over 60,000 miles and I love this bike. Grew up on Harleys, graduated to Ducs and evolved to Beemers.

What does "kicks on as designed" mean?

It means that when you push the start button the fuel pump runs for a few seconds then shuts off when the bike does not start. By runs, I mean that it makes the sound as though it is running because no fuel is coming out of the fuel line.

Hmmm... got me. I've played with lots of K fuel pumps and in my experience if they're whirring then they're pumping fuel and generating fuel pressure.

If I pull off the fuel filter, fuel flows freely from the fuel line. I have had previous experiences with fuel gumming up a carburetor but never a fuel pump. I actually did have Stabil fuel stabilizer in the fuel but it was an extended period of sitting this winter so maybe it still turned. I will reverse the connections to see if it pumps backwards.

FYI: The yellow(ish) wire is 12V+ and goes to the smaller diameter threaded terminal on the FP. The ring terminals for the FP connections are different diameters so it's hard to get that wrong.

I would like to thank everyone for their help in this matter. This was my first time reaching out on the forum and I am extremely pleased with the help I received.
As a follow up, I realized that if fuel was flowing out of the fuel line when the filter was disconnected it must be a problem with the fuel pump. I removed the pump and tested in a bucket and low and behold it was not pumping. After I saw how much the pumps cost, I took the pump and filled it with Gumout carb and choke cleaner and let it sit for a few hours while I cut the grass. When I got back to it, I shook out the carb cleaner, placed it back into the bucket to test and when hooked up to the battery it shot water everywhere. Voila like brand new! Lesson learned, if it seems obvious it probably is. Thanks again to all who chimed in. Very Happy
