I really can not believe how far the K1100LT leans on it's sidestand. It is actually scary far. I saw on the net that someone used a piece of hockey puck under the bottom for a better not so steep angle.
Today I stopped for gas and using the sidestand the fue tank took 2.7 gallons and it was "full" and when placed on the center stand it took an additional 2.2 gallons.
Is there a measurement? I am now not sure if my stand is the original? What does everyone else do?
Thanks. _________________ 1993 K1100LT |

Bob,
John here over in N.H.
These things lean over WAY too far on the sidestand.
Some have added various things to their sidestand's foot.
One possibility is that the sidestand mount has bent (the two "fingers" that attach the stand to the frame have spread)
But I personally always add fuel when the bike is on its centerstand. It always will take more when the bike is straight up.

| I've seen first hand that a shot of WD-40 will miraculously transform a side stand... on your next ride, liberally apply some roadside, and wait for the magic to happen... |

I don't buy this for a minute. There's a difference but it's A LOT smaller than that.
I don't bother with the center stand. If I want to get every last drop in then I just stay on the bike and stand to keep it upright while fueling, _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Rydor,
You know that unless there are pictures, it didn't happen- right? Bwahaha. _________________ John & Cathy

Drake,
We don't know if Bob has removed his flapper or the little funnel piece under the fuel filler. I can't imagine that it would make a difference, but maybe? _________________ John & Cathy

Just don't use it, the centerstand is really easy and convenient, no need for a side stand. _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.

The pivot on my side stand was worn out and real sloppy. I don't believe that the PO ever put a drop of grease in the fitting. I took mine apart and bushed the bore for a good running fit to the pivot bolt. This brought the bike back up to the stock lean, which I felt was still to much. I then added an aluminum pad about 3/4" thick to the bottom of the foot. Bob's your Uncle!

Here is the plan........ Pictures will be taken.....I will beg for forgiveness and confess in church that I made an internet post with out proper pictures!
I intend on placing the K on it's side stand and actually measuring the lean angle. I picked up a hockey puck today and I am going to experiment. Push comes to shove I have access to enough equipment to manufacture my own (Lathe, vertical mill and welders).
Yes, the gas station story of the fill of less than 3 gallons is true and yes the metal flapper is still in place.
Flying Duck.... this was actually an old fashioned gas pump which required me to get completely off the bike. Completely impossible to do since the lever and pump nozzle were on the side of the pump and the island had a large stand off. _________________ 1993 K1100LT |

| The side stands on both of my K's bent over time, making the bike lean too much. I heated it with a gas welding torch to straighten it out. Some black paint and fixed. |

Yep, I was concerned about the lean angle on the stand on my bike too and after looking closely at the stand it's apparent that it's bent a bit at the upper third. I'll take it off and give it a torch and hammer treatment. I've seen the jaw on side stands open up on Goldwings and cause the same excessive lean but that's easy to check by trying to move the side stand up and down to see how much play there is. On my K bike there's no up and down play so the pivot is in good shape it's just the stand being bent a bit. After all it's been there for twenty years and who knows how rough previous owners were on it. _________________ Paul W.

| It could be mentioned that the sidestand is bent a few degrees allready from the factory. |

You also need to make sure that whatever you add at the bottom will clear the center stand.
A previous owner of my turbo K75 was nice enough to weld on this little extension for me:
Funny side stand story: I was out riding my K75RT one day and pulled off to the left as far as as I could and put the bike on the side stand so that the left mirror was only about half an inch from the guardrail. I left the headlight on so oncoming cars would see the bike and not hit it. Then I hopped over the guard rail and walked down the hill a bit to shoot the pic I wanted.
As I was walking back up the hill, a couple of riders rode by. One of them slammed on his brakes, leapt off of his bike and came running back to my bike. Since it was leaned so much so close to the guard rail, he though I'd hit the guard rail and been tossed down the hill.
I explained that the bike just leaned a lot and thanked him for his concern. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I suspect it's bent because the foot pad doesn't lay flat on the ground. _________________ Paul W.

There is a slight curve to the kickstand.
There is a slight spreading of where the stand attaches which creates play at the end. The end of the side stand has 3/4" of play (19.05mm) which would increase the lean. 3/4" at the end of a 12" shaft equals quite a bit.
Further observed is where the kickstand sits in the raised position. It should be in the rubber mount and mine is resting on the muffler. It has rested on the muffler long enough to put an angled wear mark on the top side of the pad.
I can see that it will need to come apart and I like the idea of the welded on metal...... I might even increase the size of the pad.

It is actually bent to clear the exhaust from what I see. _________________ 1993 K1100LT |

Its a problem for us who drive on the left side of the road, for sure!
I used to always park on the opposite side of the road, as the camber helped to keep the bike more upright.
I have seen a K with an aluminium spacer, about 20mm thick, added to the sidestand: this would also be perfect for me!
The owner had drilled 2 holes in the stand base, and drilled/tapped the 'puck' to take a pair of M6 bolts, very neat and easy job! _________________ 1996 K1100LT
