I have been told by the dealer my motor has a lot of wear and scoring specifically in the #4 cylinder. He said it is no repairable...This bike has only 25000 miles on it. I am perplexed how this could happen...I have put a lot of money into this bike already....any suggestions..I am also a noob.[/quote]

OK, I'll ask, what were the symptoms(problems) that had you take it to the dealer in the 1st place.
The cylinder walls are pretty tough(nickasil coated), so tough that it's a waste of time/money to try and bore one out. To that end, I find it hard to believe that it could get scored with just piston ring wear after only 25K miles.......... especially when these engines can go 200K miles +

BTW, Welcome to the OG forum....

Where are you located?

If the cylinder is bad then your best option is probably to swap in a used motor.

How did the dealer determine that the cyl wall is scored? Did they take the head off and inspect it?

That's crazy low miles for something like that to occur.

Same question: what are the symptoms?
25K is not even broken in...

I've never heard of any of these engines being worn out, I have seen pictures of an engine that had run over 300K miles and you could still see the honing marks in the bores. Unless you've suffered a broken valve or similar I think someone is 'slightly' off here.....

I am located in Roseville, CA....I have been bringing the bike to A&S BMW for the last 3 years....I have bought new tires, brakes, seat, fuel pump, battery, clutch, transmission, replaced fuel lines and several hoses...I am the third owner since 95...I have the information on the previous phone numbers and addresses of them. I try not to be the paranoid type...but they are not giving me much of an answer or explanation....and I think that they may be screwing me.

So you should ask for more information, what is wrong with #4? Low compression? Valves?
Anything is reparable on this bike, worse case an engine swap is doable, you can find a used engine in good condition for a fair price, labor is more of an issue.

What happened that you needed a transmission at less than 25K..........
The other small stuff I can understand.

I think you may be right..........

Almost sounds like they don't want to work on your bike anymore and are trying to get you to either trade it for something newer or not bring it back.

Have they taken the head off? or is it still ride-able? If the latter I'd take it somewhere else for a 2nd opinion.

I've usually heard that A&S has a good reputation from the CA K owners I've talked to.

They have taken the head off...I have seen the inside of the cylinders specifically the #4....they did a compression test before..which indicated #4 had an issue....the bike rode great ( some power loss and constantly filling oil)...They were trying to get me to buy another bike...they gave zero explanation as to the cause of the wear in the cylinder s and reported all had some wear including pistons rings etc...but reaffirmed the main issue was the scoring in the cylinders specifically #4. A friend asked with all of their expertice why is it impossible to address the fact that my water cooled bike was not cooling effectively maybe even has a defective thermostat...leading to an extremely hot engine block...where the pistons rings cylinders etc...expand contract and caused scoring??? My guess is they don't discuss that until I've spent more money replacing the motor and then " oh by the way your cooling system needs fixin".

What has been the behavior of:

a) Temp gauge
b) Fan
c) Overheat light coming on
d) Radiator cap "blowing"

If c and d aren't occurring than it's not heating up enough to cause engine damage.

Maybe some crap fell into the #4 cyl at the factory??? (Although I've never hear of that happening on a K1100.)

Ok, shot in the dark here......broken piston ring? cause scoring, low compression, oil use/consumption?

I suppose it's possible, after all I had 2 burnt valves at 25K on my '97......

You're in CA. I can give you plenty of places to pick up a good used engine which will cost you lots less than shipping alone from the east coast.
